Garrettsville – “EXTRA, EXTRA Read All About It,” was the theme for The 8th Count Dance Center’s 2015 Recital.  The dance center held their 6th dance recital at the Iva Walker Auditorium Saturday, June 6, 2015. The recital carried the newspaper theme throughout the entire production. Using the newspaper, the dance center danced to musical selections that portrayed various sections of the newspaper.

The competition team started off the production, with their team dressed as news boys, in knickers, suspenders and caps. The students danced to “King of New York.” The recital took us thru the headlines, entertainment, police blotter, the society page, and the religious page, to the obituaries and memorials, travel section, advertisements and more. They added a local flair by recognizing local establishments like Second Style in their “Thrift Shop” number, Garrettsville Cinema in “Friend like Me,” from Hercules, and local eateries like Fresh Start and Millers in “Be our Guests.”

Not forgetting our long, horrible winter and all the snowy headlines, the tiny tots danced and looked way too cute in “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” They even had their own Olaf, and just like last winter, it was memorable. Katie Tuttle did a headlining act with “Concrete Angel” as she interpreted the life of an abused girl, while Morgan Lovett expressed the loss of a grandmother in “Holes in the Floor of Heaven.” The competition team also did a memorial tribute to those who have gone on before them to “See You Again,” by performing a touching dance with photos of loved ones who are no longer with them. There were criminals and  jail birds in “Jail House Rock”, traveling to Paris and Berlin thru clogging, “Men in Black” demonstrated that dance is not just for girls with an all- male hip –hop routine that was fun. A routine done to the song “Blessings” was beautifully choreograph and had great costumes as the ladies did a fine job with their interpretation of the song.

Speaking of costumes, they were brilliant, eye- catching and fun. The newsboys were well-depicted, as were the ladies who did “Blessing,” “Build Me Up, Buttercup”, the snowman routine and more. They were colorful, tasteful and just magnificent.  The day took us through the newspaper and life in general, thru clogging, lyrical, tap, jazz, hip–hop, acro and ballet.  They closed out the show using all the dancers in “Seize the Day.” It was a great show that had youngsters from preschool age to adults, who definitely nailed the theme.

The 8th Count Dance Center is located 8015 State Street in the Garfield Plaza in Garrettsville. They are offering a variety of summer classes and camps. They can be reached at 330 527-0358.
