Well, maybe, if it’s deep-fried. Or not.
Looks like the origin of the cyclosporiasis outbreak has been spotted, so-to-speak. Being found in, of all things, shredded lettuce, frequently found in vegetarian or Mexican eateries (We’re lookin’ at you, Taco Bell.). Turns out that if you prepare the leafy stuff yourself–properly–it’s more likely to be safe but if you purchase the bagged product, be prepared to suffer the consequences, pretty dire ones too. One dude who claims to have consumed a sketchy taco is suing Taco Bell and their produce supplier… and the farm that grew the lettuce …and the truckers that brought the lettuce to the restaurants… and the food preparers…and the counter workers…and the ad company that puts out the commercials…and for all I know, any radio, internet or television station that carried the Taco Bell commercial. The guy is determined to make a buck any way that he can, that’s for sure.
In other food-related news, The Week reports that an older man in Florida is suing a local Waffle House because he was “distracted” by the eye-catching ads in its windows (Duh. Isn’t that what ads are supposed to do?) and he tripped on the curb.
News Flash !!! Also from The Week : The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has just updated a definition of the term “shellfish”, omitting the phrase “having a shell”.
Henceforth, despite not having shells, such delicacies as squid, octopus and cuttlefish will now be considered (by the government anyway) to be shellfish. Choose your menu carefully.
Mark Twain is one of my favorite American writer/humorist/philosopher characters. Read some of his stuff sometime; he was often ahead of his time (Try The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg or A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court for starters). He is quoted all of the time; the American prize for humor is named for him, like the Pulitzer Prize for funny stuff.
