Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities
Weekdays
The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456.

The Phyllis Zumkehr Portage County Clothing Center, which is located at 3377 State Route 59, Ravenna, is looking for volunteers to help with sorting, hanging and stocking clothing and helping customers. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.If you are interested in volunteering, contact Veronica Williamson at 330-819-9760 or email fourwildwinds@yahoo.com.

Kindergarten Registration

The James A. Garfield School District is taking reservations for Kindergarten registration for children that will turn age 5 before August 1, 2019. Registration will take place at the Elementary on Thursday, March 21, Friday, March 22 and Monday, March 25, 2019. Please call the Elementary School office at 330-527-2184 to schedule an appointment.
Learn to Swim with the Waterdawgs
Register Today!
The Hiram College Swim Team is offering swim lessons January 13, 20, 27 & February 3, 10 (choose 2:00pm, 3:00pm, or 4:00pm). Each lesson is 35 minutes with 10 minutes of free time afterward. Cost is $60 for the entire session. To register, email sorrickmw@hiram.edu or phone 330.569.5343.

Grief Support Group

Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Mondays
Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville. Coffee and pastry will be provided at no charge.

Families Anonymous Meetings

Do you have a family member controlled by drugs or alcohol and don’t know where to turn? Families Anonymous might be the support group you need. Mantua free clothing giveaway will be resuming on January 19th, at the old Mantua Center School, 11740 Mantua Center Rd., in the same location that we originally held it in. The giveaway will run from 9 til noon. Quantities are limited, due to lack of space, but there will be a decent variety.

JAG Historical Society Program

The James A Garfield Historical Society will be presenting a program by Mike Fath on January 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Mott Building on the corner of Main and High St. Be sure to join us as Mike will be educating us on the South Newbury Union Chapel, one of the most interesting buildings in Geauga County where James A Garfield never spoke. And for consumers who get caught up in a scam, the financial repercussions can be serious! Come and learn about the scams affecting Geauga County and especially target our seniors. Karen Sweet, Lead Criminal Investigator at the Geauga County Prosecutor’s Office, will discuss all types of crime in Geauga County and take your questions at the end. The Portage County Senior Center will be holding a Lunch & Learn event entitled “Cordcutting”, on Thursday, January 24th at 10:45 a.m. Reed Library will be presenting everything you need to know about how to make the most of TV without paying for cable. The lunch will be provided, courtesy of Altercare of Brimfield. There is no cost for the event, but sign-up is required and can be done by calling 330-297-3456. The senior center is located at 705 Oakwood St. (Floor G) in Ravenna and is open to all Portage County seniors.

Women’s Auxiliary Offering Scholarship

The Women’s Auxiliary of Mantua Knights of Columbus Council #3766 is sponsoring a $500.00 scholarship for a Catholic female that is graduating in 2019 and planning to attend either a two-or four-year college or a vocational-technical school. Mantua Casino Trip to Benefit Area Families

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Mantua Knights of Columbus #3766 is hosting a casino bus trip to Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh, PA, on Monday, February 18, 2019. Cost is $40 per person and will include $20 in free play, plus a $5.00 food voucher. The Casino recommends you have your Players Card and a photo ID with you.
