Reading in the Rust Belt: A Community Conversation Through Books and Community Reading Program to Explore Rust Belt Themes of Opportunity and Resilience

Portage County District Library is partnering with Hiram College throughout the month of October for the 2023 Community Reading Program: Reading in the Rust Belt. This community reading program will focus on author Bonnie Jo Campbell’s novel American Salvage, which explores themes of the Rust Belt current opportunities in our region.

The following events will take place at different PCDL branches:

The Garrettsville Library will host Garrettsville Book Club: Community Read on Tuesday, October 17 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Jeffrey Swenson, Professor of English at Hiram College, will present “Rust Belt Regionalism in Bonnie Jo Campbell’s American Salvage.”

The Randolph Library will host a book club for patrons to discuss American Salvage by Bonnie Jo Campbell on Tuesday, October 10 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

The Randolph Library will also host “‘Economic Instability in the Rust Belt’: Presentation and Discussion” on Thursday, October 19 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Morgan Clevenger, Professor at Hiram College, will discuss the opportunities and challenges workers faced in the rust belt region.

The Pierce Streetsboro Library will host a presentation on the “History of the Rust Belt Through the Eyes of Musicians” on Tuesday, October 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. This will be presented by Isaac Windland, Professor of Music at Hiram College.
