September is a busy month for Freedom Twp Historical Society. Saturday, September 26, from 10 – 4 PM is Freedom’s Fall Festival at the intersections of Rts 303, 88, & 700. Our historical society will be there selling pumpkins and gourds donated by the Pochedly Family Farm and cornstalks donated by the Evanses. There will be white pumpkins, yellow pumpkins, large pumpkins, mini pumpkins, and every size in between. Additionally, the size, colors, and varieties of this year’s gourds will enhance all your decorating needs. This is our major yearly fundraiser which enables us to offer a variety of interesting & historical public programs each year. We also will have a few Bicentennial calendars plus 3 XL Bicentennial t-shirts for sale. So stop by, say “hi”, share your family’s history, or ask that question you’ve always wanted to ask.
Also, Drakesburg School # 2 will be open to the public Sept 26 from 10 – 2 PM. That Saturday is a good day to take a brief tour of one of Freedom’s eight one room school houses; this school house appears on the 1874 Portage County tax map making it at least 150 years old. We have new (this summer) displays in our cases including memorabilia from the brick Freedom Methodist Church.
Freedom’s September program will be a joint undertaking with Mantua & Shalersville Historical Societies on the HOLOCAUST. Susan Kollin Wiegand, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, will share her parents’ remarkable story of strength, courage and survival during the Holocaust. She will speak about the atrocities they endured, the resilience that enabled them to survive, and the ways those experiences shaped their lives forever. MONDAY, September 28, is the date of this program which will be held at the Shalerville Town Hall (intersection of Rt 303 & 44) beginning at 7 PM. Our programs are free and open to the public; no reservations are necessary. This facility is air-conditioned and completely handicap accessible.
