The Hiram College James H. Barrow Biological Field Station is pleased to announce its schedule of programming for the months of May and June. These events are meant to engage the public in an understanding of the outdoors and environmental practices. May Programs
Bio Buddies – Spring Woods Walk
Friday, May 23 | 10- 11:30 a.m. | Observation Building
Depending on the weather, preschoolers (2.5 – 5 years old) accompanied by their special adult will enjoy a spring-themed book reading, a craft, or a discovery hike outside.
Mushroom Walk
Saturday, May 24 | 9 – 11 a.m. | Observation Building
Join mushroom researcher Sarah Culliton ’25 to learn about common and unique fungus found in the Field Station’s forests. A walk in the woods could turn up something special.
Wildflower Walk
Saturday, May 17 | noon – 2 p.m. | Observation Building
Join staff naturalists on an easy 1.5 – 2 mile discovery hike through the forest preserves in search of wildflowers.
June Programs
Along Came a Spider
Thursday, June 5 | 6:30 – 8 p.m. | Visitor Center, Brick Room
Let Jacob Fergis ’25 guide you through the world of spider diversity in the Field Station’s forests and meadows. Jacob will give an informative talk, then lead a walk outside in search of some special species.
Oak Wilt: Lynn Vogel of the Portage County Soil and Water Conservation District
Tuesday, June 17 | 6:30 – 8 p.m. | Observation Building
Lynn will be discussing the identification, management, and resources available to help us fight against this fatal oak disease. We will then take a walk through the woods together, after.
Nature Journaling
Wednesday, June 18 | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. | Observation Building
Carol Agnew of Stella’s Art Gallery will guide your study of the world around you and deepen your appreciation of nature and natural phenomena in a creative way. $30 per person, payable directly to Carol at the event: cash, check or Venmo accepted.
