Once again, the Village of Mantua is at the epicenter of an event that aims to get folks outside to enjoy the three trails that converge there. The Triple Trail Fest includes activities on the Buckeye Trail, the Portage Park District Headwaters Trail, and the Cuyahoga River Water Trail.
The two-day event starts Friday, June 2nd with a kayak paddle (fee required) on the Cuyahoga River from 3-5:30 pm. At 6 pm, the Triple Trail Fest officially starts, with an opening ceremony and bonfire. That evening, visitors will be able to participate in craft beer tastings of some of northeast Ohio’s best breweries for an additional charge; Gyro Bob’s food truck will also be on hand. Mother Ale will provide a live soundtrack to the night with their blend of classic and southern rock, pop, and country music. Camping is permitted near the festival grounds that evening, as well.
On Saturday morning, celebrate National Trails Day by participating in the Buckeye Trail’s Biggest Day Hike. Starting in Mantua (a Buckeye Trail Town), hikers will follow the Mogadore Section of the Buckeye Trail towards Ravenna. The Mogadore section is well blazed and easy to navigate. At 10 am, Adam Wohlever from ODNR will lead a small group through the picturesque Charles A. Tummonds State Nature Preserve for a Glacial Heritage Hike. As participants traverse the forest above the Upper Cuyahoga State Scenic River, they’ll be immersed in the beauty of the preserve and gain a deeper understanding of the land’s remarkable glacial heritage.
At noon, the Triple Trail Challenge kicks off. This 12-mile challenge begins with a 3.5-mile bike ride heading east on the Headwaters Trail. Following the bike ride, participants transition to a 5K run, part of which winds through the Buckeye Trail, providing a demanding yet breathtaking running experience. The final leg of the challenge is a 5-mile kayak paddle down the Upper Scenic Cuyahoga River, allowing participants to revel in the beauty of the natural surroundings while navigating the pristine waters. The Triple Trail Challenge promises an unforgettable, multi-faceted outdoor experience that pushes athletes to their limits amidst stunning natural landscapes. To help celebrate this endeavor, race participants receive a complementary beer ticket with their registration.
Also starting at noon and continuing throughout the day, the Portage Park District will make it easier for families to explore the wonders of nature at this year’s Triple Trail Fest. Simply stop at the Portage Park District table to check out an activity field bag that’s stocked with self-guided activities suitable for all ages. Perfect for an hour-long adventure, the field bags will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. At 1 pm, join the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves (DNAP) on a free, guided nature float on the Upper Cuyahoga River Scenic River. Registration is required, as group size is limited. If you have your own kayak or canoe, please drop it off at the White Oaks put in site (5437 OH-82) by 12:15. Please note that there is no parking at White Oaks due to this special event, so take the shuttle from Buchert Park or plan to have someone drop you off prior to the 1 pm start time.
If paddling isn’t your thing, why not try some yoga by the trail with Krystal Buxa? Starting at 2 PM, this one-hour yoga session is designed for all levels, whether a newcomer or seasoned yogi. Bring balance to your festival as you embrace the opportunity to find inner peace and restoration amidst the natural beauty of the trail. While this experience is free, a donation of $10 is suggested to benefit the Triple Trail Fest.
If bicycling is more your speed, why not bike with Portage Park District’s Ranger Kevin Nietert? An experienced trail guide, Ranger Nietert will lead two bike rides – one at 2 pm for families and kids, and another at 4 pm for adults. As you pedal, he’ll share insights about the area’s natural history and points of interest along the trail, offering a unique blend of outdoor recreation and education.
At 3 pm, you’ll have the opportunity to Hike to the Divide — the distinctive paths of two different watersheds that converge in our area. One watershed leads to the Tuscarawas River, eventually merging into the Ohio River, ultimately flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. The other watershed leads to the Cuyahoga River, onward to Lake Erie, and eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean. During the hike, you’ll also see rock formations exposed from the last ice advance into Ohio, which concluded around 12,000 years ago. You’ll discover the natural forces that have shaped the landscape over millennia in this informative hike.
If you’re looking for an opportunity for you and your furry friend to socialize on the trail, the Tail Wagging Dog Hike starts at 3 pm. This structured socialization pack walk will encourage dogs to walk alongside each other, fostering trust and cooperation without direct face-to-face interactions. It’s a great way for your dog to get exercise, make new friends, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors in the company of other canine companions. Don’t miss this chance for your dog to have a safe and rewarding socialization experience. A $15 donation is suggested.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll amidst stunning natural landscapes, you’re invited to join Rhonda Chartier from Adventurous Souls for a 3:30 pm hike. This casual hike offers the perfect opportunity to explore the beauty of the surroundings in a relaxed setting. Meandering along for approximately an hour and a half, this hike is sure to leave you invigorated and inspired.
The final event of the Fest is the Rubber Duck Race. Participants will be invited to the duck drop at 6:30, where they’ll watch their ducks race to the finish. Cost is $10 per duck; owner of the winning duck earns $100.
