New scholarships at Hiram College to recognize Girl Scouts

2987

Hiram – Hiram College, in conjunction with Girl Scouts of the USA, is excited to announce new scholarships that recognize personal motivation, service to others, and high achievement. As part of the agreement, exemplary Girl Scouts who have earned a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Award, and have been referred by their troop leader as a strong match for the College, will be awarded a scholarship worth at least 50 percent of tuition and mandatory fees.

“With these scholarships, Hiram College is recognizing the importance of service learning and the courage, confidence, and character it takes Girl Scouts to receive these awards,” says GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo. “Girl Scouts is thrilled that Hiram College is bringing greater educational opportunities to exceptional Girl Scouts who have taken action in their communities to earn the highest service awards—Silver and Bronze Awards—and also for those who developed and carried out innovative and sustainable solutions to issues on a local, national and/or global level for their Gold Award—the most prestigious award in Girl Scouting.”

Located in the Western Reserve, Hiram College has long been committed to educational excellence, helping students develop a 21st-century skill set and mindset that will allow them to thrive in their personal lives, at a time when societal changes are constant and complex. The College’s New Liberal Arts™ prepares students to answer tough questions, solve complex problems, and communicate their ideas through a broad, interdisciplinary curriculum. Recognizing that learning doesn’t just take place in the classroom, 100 percent of Hiram students complete an internship, research, or study-away experience as they connect classroom learning with the “real world.”

Liz Okuma, Ph.D., vice president and dean of students at Hiram College, believes that this educational opportunity would allow students to build on the core skills they have already developed as a Girl Scout. “Students today want a college education that is geared toward 21st-century success and well-being,” said Okuma. “Hiram College has long been committed to educational excellence and we are excited to partner with Girl Scouts of the USA to provide exemplary opportunities that will help eligible Girl Scouts understand how to propose remedies for the urgent challenges of our day, master course content, further develop personal character, and earn a degree that will lead to a fulfilling profession.”

To qualify, eligible students must be admitted to Hiram College in fall 2019 and carry a GPA of 2.8 or above with an ACT score of 18 or higher. To retain the scholarship, students must maintain a 2.0 GPA, and remain active and in good standing at the College. The award cannot be combined with other Hiram merit-based awards. If a recipient should qualify for a merit-based scholarship at Hiram, the student will be awarded the scholarship of the highest value.
