Marching to the Magic: Garfield Band Plans Return to Walt Disney World

2360

After a prolonged wait, the James A. Garfield Marching Pride is preparing for an exciting trip to Disney World in 2024. Traditionally, their band performs at Disney parks every three years, a tradition disrupted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting numerous other bands similarly. Some graduated members missed this cherished experience due to circumstances beyond their control.

In the preceding year, an attempt was made to journey to Florida. However, various restrictions necessitated cancellation, disappointing many students. Despite these challenges, they remain determined to make this journey a reality, crafting indelible memories for all participants.

One challenge they face involves filling all the bus seats, for which a solution has been found. The Band Boosters generously agreed to cover the remaining seat costs, actively organizing fundraisers to aid students and chaperones with trip expenses. Fund can also be raised and contributed to individual students’ accounts. One thing that is clear though is that additional financial assistance will be required to meet their goal.

Their band size exceeds the capacity of a single bus but falls short of filling two. Consequently, some seats may remain vacant, but the overall bus cost remains the same. To address this, they’ve initiated the ‘Buy a Mile’ fundraiser, seeking community support. Donations of at least $10 are appreciated, with any amount being welcome.

The marching band stands as a source of pride for a significant segment of their community. Students dedicate extensive practice to perform at football games, parades, and various events. The Disney World performance selection process begins about a year in advance, requiring bands submit a video showcasing their marching and playing skills for consideration by Disney.

For those selected, the journey commences, involving parents, students, and the community collaborating to make payments, fundraise, and prepare for this exceptional experience. Seniors, who have waited for this opportunity since beginning their musical journey in fifth grade, express particular excitement. Landen Gedeon, the senior class President and a member of the Marching Pride, eagerly anticipates this chance after the pandemic postponement, having missed out during his sophomore year. He enthusiastically states, ‘It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase our band to people from all around the world.’

To support their cause, checks for the fundraiser can be made out to Garfield Band Boosters and sent to:
