This week at the Middlefield Senior Center, Dawn Damante, MHA, CDP, of University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, presented an informative session titled “Understanding Stress Later in Life” for local seniors.
Dawn explained that stress does not simply disappear with retirement. In fact, later life often brings a unique set of transitions—changes in health, relationships, daily routines, and personal identity—that can quietly increase stress levels.
She outlined several common sources of stress for older adults, including health concerns, caregiving responsibilities, grief, financial challenges, loneliness, and a loss of independence.
During the presentation, Dawn discussed how stress can affect older adults differently, both physically and emotionally. She highlighted its impact on sleep, memory, mood, and chronic health conditions, as well as cognitive and emotional effects such as anxiety, depression, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
Participants also learned to recognize signs of stress, including withdrawal from activities, changes in appetite, increased reliance on medications or alcohol, and noticeable mood shifts.
Dawn shared practical coping strategies, encouraging regular physical activity, a balanced diet, relaxation techniques, and maintaining consistent daily routines. She emphasized the importance of strong social connections with family, friends, and support networks, along with seeking professional help when needed through counseling, medical care, and stress management resources.
To conclude, Dawn offered simple yet effective ways to reduce stress, including maintaining a positive mindset, engaging in lifelong learning, finding purpose, staying active, and enjoying activities such as music, crafting, and practicing gratitude.
