As Garrettsville SummerFest prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary, organizers are turning their attention to a critical need behind the scenes: upgrading the festival’s aging electrical infrastructure to safely support its continued growth.
What began in 2005 as a small-town gathering has evolved into one of the community’s most anticipated annual events, drawing families, local businesses, musicians, vendors, and visitors for a weekend filled with entertainment, parades, fireworks, and live music. But as attendance and attractions have increased, so too have the demands placed on the festival’s power supply.
The current electrical system has deep roots in the community. Originally purchased in the early 1980s by Bil-Mar Foods for the former “Turkey Daze” festival, the cords and equipment were later passed down to SummerFest organizers. While they have reliably powered decades of celebrations, festival officials say the system is now outdated and no longer meets modern safety standards or capacity needs.
“With this being our 20th year, it’s the perfect time to invest in the future of SummerFest,” organizers said. “We want to ensure the event can continue safely and successfully for many more years.”
The first phase of the upgrade project is estimated at $20,000 and will focus on the most urgent improvements. Planned enhancements include increasing overall electrical capacity, updating distribution equipment for safer and more efficient power management, adding new vendor connections, and improving lighting and safety systems throughout the festival grounds.
Organizers emphasize that these upgrades are not just for this year’s event, but a long-term investment in the festival’s sustainability and the safety of thousands who attend each year.
To help meet the initial funding goal, SummerFest is seeking donations of any amount, as well as in-kind contributions such as electrical materials or professional services. Supporters will be recognized across the festival’s social media platforms in appreciation of their role in maintaining and improving the event.
As the milestone celebration approaches, organizers are calling on the community to rally behind an event that has become a cherished tradition.
“SummerFest is celebrating its 20th year,” organizers said. “If you or your family have enjoyed the great entertainment, parades, fireworks, and music in the past, please consider helping us so we can continue this great event for many years to come.”
