The Geauga Parks District is inviting the local community to enjoy a variety of special programs and entertainment celebrating America's 250th anniversary beginning on July 10 at 7 p.m.

As our country celebrates its 250th birthday nationwide, Geauga Park District is inviting our local community to enjoy a variety of special programs and entertainment inspired by America 250-Ohio, the statewide commemoration of our nation’s semiquincentennial, and Ohio Goes to the Movies, a signature America 250-Ohio initiative celebrating the Buckeye State’s rich film history!

Among featured programs is American History in the Sky on Friday, July 10, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Observatory Park’s Robert McCullough Science Center. Explore America’s history through 10 astronomy-related stories and discoveries (no registration required), followed by night sky viewing, weather permitting.

Three days later on Monday, July 13, Frohring Meadows will be the place to be for Monday FUN-Day: Big Games in the Park from 6 to 8 p.m. In keeping with July’s America 250 theme, “Ohio Gathers,” visitors are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy giant outdoor games such as Jenga, Connect Four, yard dice, dominoes and more (also no registration required).

Later this summer, more America 250-themed opportunities include 250 Years of Eagles & Turkeys, part of the Nature Night Lecture Series, on Friday, August 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center (no registration required); the Park District’s presence at The Great Geauga County Fair September 3 through 7, featuring a glimpse into how present-day Geauga may have looked 250 years ago, daily Monarch Butterfly programs, and daily Monarch tagging demonstrations at 3:30 p.m.; and Family Night Campfire & Fun on Tuesday, September 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. (registration required).

In honor of Ohio Goes to the Movies, did you know Superman has deep ties to Cleveland, where creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster first imagined the iconic hero in the 1930s? Released in 2025, the latest Superman film also was filmed in Cleveland and features Cleveland native Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl. That’s why Observatory Park will be hosting a free outdoor screening of Superman (PG-13) on Saturday, July 11.

Guests are encouraged to arrive at 6 p.m. for pre-show activities exploring the movie’s Ohio connections before showtime begins at 7 p.m. on a giant LED screen. Bring blankets, chairs, snacks, water and bug spray, and enjoy an evening under one of Ohio’s darkest night skies. Observatory Park is located at 10610 Clay Street in Montville Township.

America’s giant birthday party has even taken over the Park District’s popular Nights Out in the Parks concert series, featuring exclusively American music this summer. Performances take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on select Saturdays in the outdoor amphitheater behind Big Creek Park’s Donald W. Meyer Center, at 9160 Robinson Road in Chardon Township, and include:

Bent String Band on July 25, performing early American roots music, including early jazz, acoustic blues and Jazz Age-inspired originals.

Big North Band on August 8, performing traditional country favorites.

Everything listed here is free for all to attend. Concerts move indoors in case of inclement weather. For more information about these and other special events, visit www.geaugaparkdistrict.org/activity/special-events-art-shows or call 440-286-9516.
