Friends of the Hiram College Library to Host Program on Ancient Bronze Statue Repatriation

114

The Friends of the Hiram College Library will present a special spring program, “An Ancient Bronze Statue from Bubon to Cleveland and Back: Research, Repatriation, and Collaboration,” on March 31 at 6 p.m. in the Pritchard Room on the second floor of the Hiram College Library.

The program will feature Seth Pevnick, Curator of Greek and Roman Art, and Colleen Snyder, Conservator of Objects, from the Cleveland Museum of Art. The presentation will explore the investigation and repatriation of a monumental ancient Greco-Roman bronze statue that stood at the museum from 1986 until 2025 and was long believed to have originated from the ancient city of Bubon in present-day Türkiye.

Drawing on scientific analysis, international collaboration, and on-site research, the speakers will discuss questions of provenance, identification, and the evolving responsibilities of museums in cases involving cultural heritage and repatriation. The program offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at how curators, conservators, and international partners work together to determine the history and rightful home of significant ancient artifacts.

The event is free and open to students, faculty, alumni, and members of the community. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Hiram College Library and the Hiram Classics Program.
