The Geauga County Historical Society is gearing up to kickoff a busy summer with the unveiling of a new exhibit to coincide with the annual Civil War Weekend, being held on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, 2025.
The exhibit, “Threads of Valor,” designed by curator/archivist Stefanie O’Connor, features over 100 military uniforms from Geauga County veterans.
“Threads of Valor features an inspiring collection of original uniforms, medals, personal belongings, and other historical artifacts that share the personal stories of military service members. Each piece is carefully curated to highlight its historical and emotional significance, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the lives and legacies of those who served. More than a display, this exhibit is a tribute to courage and a testament to the enduring spirit of our nation’s defenders,” said O’Connor.
“Threads of Valor” is part of the immersive experience visitors to the Century Village Museum and Historical Education Center will receive when they visit for the Civil War encampment and re-enactment event.
In addition to the new exhibit, the smell of campfires, and the roar of artillery, visitors to Century Village will have the opportunity to interact with living historians portraying President Abraham Lincoln (John King), Confederate President Jefferson Davis (David Walker), Major General James and Mrs. Lucretia Garfield (Benjamin Frayser and Anita Benedetti), and Major General William T. Sherman (Kris Gunvalsen). There will also be a special exhibit featuring 160 images of Abraham Lincoln, Civil War Trivia, children’s-related activities, and music and programming throughout both days. A full schedule of events for the Civil War Weekend may be found at www.centuryvillagemuseum.org.
Leading in to Civil War Weekend, the Geauga County Historical Society received a historically-themed mural banner from the 6th graders of Berkshire Middle School in Burton on Tuesday, May 20th.
“This is going to be a great week and weekend of events here at Century Village,” said Linda Taurisano, President and Chair of the Board of the Geauga County Historical Society. “We look forward to having people from all over here to experience one of our biggest events each year.”
