Geauga County   Four 2013 high school graduates from the Geauga County area are the latest recipients of the UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship Grant. The grant is awarded to exceptional students who are going on to pursue a career in the health care field.
The Auxiliary received more than two dozen applicants for this year’s grant. “To be eligible, a graduating senior must be a resident of Geauga County, attend a high school that serves Geauga County; and state his or her health care career goals in an essay,” says Helen Thomas, Vice President, UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary and Scholarship Committee Chairperson. “Our five-member committee looks at the applicants’ academic records; their commitments and achievements at school and in the community; and their financial needs. We consider the complete picture of their academic and personal accomplishments.”
Based on funds raised throughout each year, the Auxiliary has awarded annual grants in varying amounts to area high school seniors for two decades. This spring, these students each received a one-year grant of $1,000 to be applied to their 2013-2014 college tuition:
Ayla King from Cardinal High School in Middlefield, who will attend Kent State University this fall. Her interest is in nursing and she plans to go to medical school.
Blake Nelson from Kenston High School in the Bainbridge area, who will attend Wittenberg University this fall. He plans to be a cardiologist.
Allison Porter from Kenston High School, who will attend The Ohio State University. She plans to become a physician specializing in internal medicine or family medicine.
Nadine Slezak from Kenston High School, who will also attend Ohio State. Her interests are in radiology, pathology and pediatrics.
“Two of the graduates are now gaining experience here at UH Geauga Medical Center,” says Mary Brazofsky, President, UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary. “All of our scholarship winners are very bright and so appreciative. It’s rewarding to see them so into their work.”
“We’re very happy to be able to aid these students with their financial needs,” adds Thomas. “We hope they will want to come back to our area to work and care for people in the Geauga County community.”
