The August 20, 2018 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club dealt with the following topics :
The new exchange student, Natalie, will be arriving this week, late on Tuesday, if all of the details are in place.
The Boardwalk staining project is proceeding apace, with groups of all kinds pitching in—many school teams from JAG and other interested individuals around to “supervise”. The hoped-for finish date is in September. Volunteers are still welcome. See John Crawford for details. Quite a few folks have been using and admiring the Boardwalk and the surrounding space.
On the subject of signs for the Headwaters Trail, the James A. Garfield Historical Society is going to be consulted for events, persons and community features to be highlighted on the way-finding notices to encourage exploration of the village. Additionally, stones are being sought to construct a wall to replace chain link fencing at the Windham St. entrance…and possibly other locations.
Stew Buchanan was in attendance; he introduced Karen Bordinaro of the Aurora club as the assistant district governor for Portage Caounty. He also announced that the shoeboxes for the education project in Nicaragua have left for their destination
The third—and youngest guest was Marley, granddaughter of John Wolfe.
There was some discussion of assisting the YMCA and the village obtain some playground equipment and other assets from a closing facility in Euclid, to be used in the village parks, both Park Ave. and Brosius Rd., and in the Y itself. We’re talkin’ big trucks and plenty of muscles, here. Contact the Y or Tom Collins of village council to volunteer.
The program for the day was presented by Angie Smithberger of Always in Bloom garden center in the wilds of Nelson Township. She told of upcoming events such as the Evening in the Garden—done with the participation of the local gourmet shop, Top Tier Pastry; the October Tea, featuring –what else?—a variety of teas and go-withs; Fall in Love with Autumn, a gathering featuring local artisans and their hand-crafted goods, in September; a treasure hunt in the greenhouse. It’s a place for community conversation, for quiet reflection, for friends to meet and be made. It’s unique.
It was a day for “better late than never.” Rotary is always aiming to get better.
