The May 7, 2018 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club was focused on the following business, none of it funny :
Two very active, ambitious and motivated young ladies were chosen to attend the annual RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly) at Baldwin-Wallace in June. Rachel Rader and Zoe Swenson are members of many student groups at James A. Garfield High School, including, but not limited to, Student Council, InterAct, band, Quiz Bowl, bowling, cross country. They will be outstanding representatives of their school and G-H Rotary and will return to speak to the club and to bring information to others about the opportunity.
An official induction for two new members—John Crawford and Debra Blake—was held, with President Amy Crawford performing the ceremony and presenting official documents of membership.
Tom Collins brought information about current grant applications and fulfillments having to do with Trail landscaping (pollinator promotion, indigenous plants, etc.) And a proposal for lighting the falls, will be taken up in the Fall. New member Debra Blake presented a work outline having to do with materials needed, hours required, the possibility of InterAct involvement to complete the project
July 12—Rotarians are being invited to the Cleveland Indians game at Progressive Field which will be highlighting support for a worldwide Rotary campaign to End Polio Now. It will be Carlos Carrasco bobblehead night. Mention was also made of going to an Akron Rubber Ducks game.
The club voted to become a sponsor of the Friends of Melana 5K/Fun Run during SummerFest.
John Wolfe is now in rehab and would appreciate cards and contact; he’s bored.
At James A. Garfield : the InteAct club will be going to participate in Habitat for Humanity activities on May 19. PTC play-offs are up across the board, the Garfield Pride Concert Band got a I at state, two Garfield Maplewood students have been state-recognized, one heading to nationals. The “Leader-in-Me” program at the elementary school is going great with a new monthly program. Go, G-Men!
