Garrettsville – Hiram Rotary Report

865

It being the first meeting of the month, the February 5, 2018 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club focused on the following items of business.

John Crawford is being tapped as president-elect and will be preparing for attendance at PETS( President Elect Training Sessions) meetings soon. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Activities) sessions are coming in June; information will be going to James A. Garfield High School and to the InterAct Club to inform possible participants. Many thanks are going to the Carlisle/Hill clan for being the storage facility for Santa’s sleigh for so many years. Power of the Pen and Penn-Ohio competitions are coming up, to be held at KSU campuses. Rotary will not be sponsoring an event at Garfield this year…since there are none.

Prospective new members are, as always, being recruited; proprietors of the Mill and The Cellar Door are in the club’s sights. There has been communication with the Mantua-Shalersville club about some co-operative activities. Information on the Hudson Rotary came up. Tom Collins and Delores McCumbers attended a grants committee meeting and told a little bit about the application process, including proposal, presentation and submission. A committee has been formed to compose and organize a list of priorities for future projects. Tom Collins, being a newly-elected councilperson, will be acting as liaison with the village for timely co-ordination of said projects. The last completed activity will finalize the previous grant report. There was a splash pad discussion.

The February 12, 2018 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club, at Cal’s II, Sky Plaza, Garrettsville, OH, convened to cover the following topics :
Stu Buchanan, assistant governor for District 6630, was in attendance to call attention to the availability of tickets to the annual Rotary basketball game featuring the Cleveland Cavaliers and with all of the district foreign exchange students invited.

It was “thumbs up” for the final wrap-up treasurer’s report, putting grant monies and projects and planning ducks in a row. Bravo.

And speaking of grants… A committee has been formed to take charge and be the driver for future grants; this committee will now include president-elect John Crawford. It is the purpose of the committee to consolidate and organize the entire grant-submission process, so that the entire process can be more efficient and successful. Delores McCumbers sits on the district grant committee. A preliminary gathering of the local committee is to be at The Cellar Door.

News came that the James A. Garfield High School student council has successfully completed its fundraising project to put up a railing at the ramp leading from the parking lot to the event door. Actual construction awaits a hint of Spring.

Upcoming events worthy of note as regards the district Stadium Improvement group (This committee is working to upgrade concession stands and restroom facilities; donations are welcome): Night at the Races fundraiser and the excellent raffle offering a concrete patio installation by Creative Concrete Impressions, owned by Garfield grad, Mike Patterson. The winning ticket will be drawn at Night at the Races; competition is fierce. Tickets are still available.

Steve Zabor will be the program next week. He will be speaking on his trip to India for a Rotary program.
