907

Registration is now open for the Portage County Family-to-Family Education Program, a free, 12-week class for families and others who have a loved one with a mental illness.

The class will run every Tuesday starting January 17, 6:30 to 9 p.m., at the Mental Health & Recovery Board located at 155 E. Main Street in Kent

A national program through NAMI, the class is taught by NAMI-trained family members and includes presentations, discussion and interactive exercises. The free class is co-sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Portage County and the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Portage County and provides education and support to help families and others who have a loved one with mental illness to better understand the disorders, behavior, treatments and impact. Some of the topics covered will include the types of mental illness, medications and side effects, how to communicate more effectively with your loved one, recent changes in mental illness courts, medical insurance, and more.

NAMI Portage County is a local chapter of the national NAMI organization that brings together people with mental illness and their families to work on improving the lives of people with mental illness. For more information, go to www.namiportagecounty.org
