The Adult Basic & Literacy Education (ABLE) Program, a non-profit in Portage County, serves those 16 and over that are working towards their GED.    There are four segments to the GED test, which include:  English/reading, math, science and social studies.  Every time you score a 155 or higher on a segment of the GED pre-test, the ABLE Program at Maplewood Career Center will pay for it.   You could end up taking the GED for free!

How is this possible?   The Portage County Literacy Coalition (PCLC), a non-profit for 30 years, along with other donors are making it possible for Portage County residents to complete their GED for free.  Helen Jane Wilson, a previous Adult Basic & Literacy Education Coordinator, created the PCLC knowing a need to bring literacy needs to the Portage County area.   The PCLC not only pays for those scoring a 155+ on their GED pre-test, but also:  Sponsors a yearly Spelling Bee at NEOMED with three-member teams from area businesses competing against each other to raise money for literacy, hosts a GED Recognition at Maplewood Career Center every June to honor GED graduates, and promotes the Wilson Fund Scholarships for GED graduates stepping into post-secondary education, training, or trade.

The Adult Basic & Literacy Education Program has certified instructors in a non-traditional classroom setting.  We also have a Transitions Counselor that will guide you along your educational journey making goals for college and career readiness.

Our main site is located at Maplewood Career Center with additional sites in Brimfield, Brady Lake, Kent, Ravenna, Streetsboro, and Windham.   Classes are conveniently located on the bus line in the morning, afternoon, and evening to fit your schedule.  All of our classes, materials, and the GED pre-test are free-of-charge.

If you are interested in completing your GED today for free, please sign up for an orientation by e-mailing gauntnerla@mwood.cc or calling (330) 235-0020.
