What’s new in Newton Falls?  As you walk down historic Broad Street, enjoying the unique shops, you are in for another treat…a treat from The Sweeter Side!  We know Lily McGinniss from the Broken Leaf Cafe. The Broken Leaf has been in business for a few years now, and Lilly thought it was time to expand.  When Healthy Treasures, next door, closed, she saw her opportunity.  Gone now are the shelves of healthful supplements and organic food, to be replaced by candy and ice cream.  Ironic, but in a yummy way!

Lily and her family, husband Andrew McGinnis and son Arlo, gave the area a complete makeover.  It is now spacious and bright, pink and teal to be exact.  There are rows and end caps of nostalgic candies.  Who doesn’t fondly remember Mallow Cups, Cow Tails, Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum, or Frosty’s Root Beer?  Walking the displays felt like a quick trip through my childhood.

Then comes the creme de la creme…Cockeyes’ Ice cream in a variety of flavors. (If you haven’t enjoyed a meal at Cockeyes’ Bar-B-Q in Warren, and follow up with dessert at their creamery, this is a treat you must give yourself!)

You walk back to the ice cream counter and look up at the ever-changing menu. You can order your ice cream by the cone, bowl or in a shake or float. When this reporter was in, the menu included French Vanilla, Pumpqueen (I love what you did there, Lilly!) Blueberry Cheesecake, Butter Pecan, Cookie Monster, Wired, and Kong.  So, some standard yumminess along with inventive yumminess.  For Ethel, this is the reason to return again and again.

As you enjoy your treat, you can’t help but notice the artwork.  The mural on the wall as well as the front window were done by Lilly.  Obviously, she is a woman of many talents.  Ethel observed people walking down the sidewalk and peering in the window, enticed by the artwork there. Entitled Spooky Sweets with a Halloween theme, it is indeed enticing.

Lilly has 5 employees between her two businesses.  Many are family members and occasional students working between school schedules. Broken Leaf has been an active member of NFACA and has participated in the downtown activities they organize, such as Late Night in the Falls and Autumn in the Falls.  Lilly expects to continue the tradition with Sweeter Side.

Lilly just gave me a tasty update about their ever-rotating ice cream flavors,

Hmm, just in time for our favorite Fall holiday!  Stop in so you can give your Trick or Treaters a great treat indeed!
