Every year in a small village located in northern Portage County of Ohio a fever breaks out that sweeps through the village and affects the entire population of this small village. It usually happens just before Memorial Day weekend. This quiet village becomes a traffic jam for the locals trying to go about their normal weekend activities. Drivers stop in the middle of the road with no warning then veer off into a make believe parking space. Entire families with mothers pushing strollers and toddlers on bicycles flow through the village seemingly aimless in direction. Vehicles towing trailers line the roadway as you try and squeeze by to get home after a hard days work. Tents and canopies pop up all across the village along with yard signs to peek the curious. People it seems come form all over the country to view this phenomenon and they too become infected by the fever. Everyone has come down with the fever and it spreads like a virus infecting all that venture into what is know as Garrettsville Yard Sale Weekend.
The fever has grown over the years as more and more people have become aware of it and want to see it for themselves. I am not sure who deserves the credit for coming up with the idea of combining all the yard sales into one weekend but it truly was a brilliant idea. Though as a resident of Garrettsville id does make normal weekend travel difficult and still I can’t help but watch in wonder as the fever infected people scurry about in search of that perfect bargain. Next year it will be in their garage sitting on a sale table waiting for that unsuspecting infected buyer to come along. And so it goes this Garrettsville Yard Sale Weekend. Catch the Fever!
