Scarecrows Take Over Buckeye Block

251

Garrettsville – On Saturday, October 8th the Garrettsville Area Chamber of Commerce held their first annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook-off on the Buckeye Block in downtown Garrettsville.

Included in this event was a Scarecrow Pagent in which area businesses, students and teachers from the James A Garfield School District created amazing scarecrows which were put on display. Voting by the public took place and three winners (pictured above) were announced later in the afternoon. Taking first place was Christina Cupples’ 2nd grade class, second place went to the Portage Park District and third place honors went to teachers Kristine Gilmer and Frances Bell.

Eight chili chefs competed for bragging rights (and amazing trophies) at the Chili Cook-off. Entries included traditional style as well as venison chili. Attendees were able to purchase tasting cups as well as bowls of chili at the event. Our four judges – Brian Morgan, SRO Emily Ahrens, Michelle Harmon and Mark Brady — cast their votes for the top three chili entries. The winners were 1st place – Chris Sanchez, 2nd place – Shane O’Keefe and 3rd Place – Julie Whan.

In addition to area vendors being on hand, DJ Kavelli provided music for the event, and VP Realty did face painting for kids.

This event was just one of many fundraisers that the chamber has planned to help raise funds for the Buckeye Block Amphitheatre construction.

Thank you to everyone who participated – the weather was great and a good time was had by everyone who attended.

If you missed seeing the scarecrows, many will be on display on Saturday, October 22 during the NGCC’s Murder Mystery Dinner at the JAG Campus.
