Mantua – Since the first full week of October is designated as Fire Prevention Week, the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department visited Crestwood Primary School to share some fire safety information. They visited 264 first and second graders, sharing fire safety tips with students to help keep themselves and their families safe.

Among the lessons that day, they learned the importance of planning a home escape plan and practicing that plan with their family. Students were also advised to know two ways out of every room in their home, in case one exit is blocked or dangerous to use. Kids were also given yet another reason to keep their bedrooms clean, since urged having a clear path to exits makes it easier to escape in the case of a fire at home. According to the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Association, in a typical home fire, families only have one to two minutes from the time the alarm sounds to safely escape.

In other news, Fire Board members Jason Carlton, Bob Gaglione, and Frank Ruehr Jr. approved the request by Fire Chief Matt Roosa to have Homestead Exterior Solutions complete roof repairs to the station. This Millersburg company, recently completed repairs to the roof over the station’s apparatus bay. The new project will complete needed repairs to the roof over the station’s administration and living quarters. The work should be completed prior to winter.

In other news, Chief Roosa reported that the department’s implementation of Multi-Agency Radio Communication System (MARCS) radios was scheduled to go live on January 1st, 2020. He noted that department staff is in the process of programming and training throughout the fall in order to be prepared to utilize this state-of-the-art communications system in the new year.

Lastly, several on-duty firefighters had the opportunity to meet actor Liam Neeson, who stopped by the MSFD station in early October. Neeson was in Northeast Ohio filming “The Minuteman”. No release date has been set for the film. The next MSFD Board meeting will be held on Monday, November 11th at 6 pm at the Fire Station; residents are encouraged to attend.
