Nelson Twp – Birds sang while the familiar scent of campfire wafted through the crisp spring air on a recent Saturday afternoon at Camp Chickagami in Geauga County. “Today we mark a great occasion,” announced Cubmaster Eric, “The graduation of Webelos Scouts Bentley and Colton from Pack 62.” Bentley and Colton became the newest members of Boy Scout Troop 4065 from the Great Trail Council in Nelson.
Typically, boys begin their journey as Cub Scouts. In Kindergarten they’re called Lions, moving to Tigers in Grade one, Wolves in grade two, and Bears in grade three. They become Webelos in grade four, the name serving as a reminder, ‘We be loyal Scouts’.
That day, fifth grade Webelos Bentley and Colton received the highest rank in Cub Scouts: the Arrow of Light. “I challenge each of you to follow where that Arrow of Light points,” implored Cubmaster Eric. “Forward on the BSA trail and upward to higher challenges.” Afterwards, Cubmaster Eric and Pack Leader Jeremy ushered the two Webelos through a crossover ceremony to join Scoutmaster David and the Boy Scouts of Troop 4065. The event took place at Geauga Park District’s Chickagami Park, a former Boy Scout Camp that’s still used for camp outs and activities by local Scouts.
For those interested in Boy Scouting, Troop 4065 meets each week at the Nelson Community House. Throughout the year, they attend camps, participate in community service projects, march in parades, and learn valuable skills. For more information about scouting, visit BeAScout.org.
