This amazing lady was an outstanding social and cultural figure in turn-of-the-century St. Louis but not an especially remarkable cook until the unfortunate demise of her husband left her and her family in dire financial straits., She then proceeded to produce the most popular cookbook of all time, having gone through seven different revisions and sold more than fifteen million copies, notwithstanding various publishing crises and subsequent loss of income; her daughter and grandson contributed to “righting the ship”, so-to-speak and the book is still regarded by many as the revered touchstone of American culinary arts. She seems to have succeeded in her aim , which she pronounced to be, “to lift everyday cooking out of the commonplace.”

The next meeting of the Twentieth Century Club will be on November 19 at the Garrettsville United Methodist Church.
