Sixty-five local students are spending part of their summer learning about healthcare careers while supporting patients, visitors and staff through University Hospitals Portage Medical Center’s Summer Volunteer Program, the largest group in the program’s history.

The 10-week program provides students age 15 and older with hands-on experience in a healthcare setting through a variety of non-clinical volunteer roles. Participants assist throughout the hospital while building communication skills, confidence and a deeper understanding of healthcare and community service.
Established more than 15 years ago, the program has grown from a small volunteer opportunity into a structured learning experience that now includes lunch and learn sessions and observational learning opportunities. Many students join the program to explore careers in healthcare, while others participate to gain work experience and give back to their community.
“Our Summer Volunteer Program gives young people a unique opportunity to learn, serve and explore potential career paths while making a positive impact on patients and families,” said UH Portage Volunteer Services leaders. “It provides meaningful exposure to the healthcare environment while helping students develop valuable lifelong skills.”
The program is offered each summer, with flexible dates to accommodate school schedules. More information about volunteer opportunities at UH Portage is available on the UH Portage website or by calling Volunteer Services at (330) 297-2591.
