The February 16, 2026 meeting of the James A. Garfield Historical Society opened with an invitation from the Portage County Historical Society to an Open House on March 7 at the society’s center in Ravenna; This invitation is being extended to all historical societies in the county to encourage communication and co-operation among the groups.

New board of trustees members are being sought to be responsible for the building and systems in operation. Related to that, the rental property is currently empty and needs to be cleaned out and renovated–that’s a board responsibility. The program/activities for St. Patrick’s Day were discussed; there will be a notice online. Hours are ten to three.

Cindy Sheehan then presented a report of sorts on the “Cradle to the Grave” presentation about President James A.Garfield headed up by his great, great, great grandson Tim Garfield. A statue from Maryland will be coming to Hiram.

Kit Semplak then brought up some of the past with a display of stereopticon views of the village, mostly taken by three different photographers–French, Udall (or Udell), and Holcomb. The group enjoyed figuring out where those locations are now and who lived there then and now.

JAGHS meets in the Mott Building on Main Street during the third Monday of the month at seven o’clock. Y’all come.
