The Garfield Trail is excited to provide the third year of its Discovering Garfield Lecture Series. Executive Director, Tim Garfield, stated “that we are pleased that the first and second-year program were so well received. Last year we had over 125 people attend the four programs. These interesting and free programs will continue to help promote awareness of the life of President James A. Garfield.”
The Garfield Trail announces the first program for 2026 of the Discovering Garfield Lecture Series. This program “James A. Garfield: Preacher, Principal and President” will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. at Koritansky Hall- Hiram College Campus – corner of Garfield Rd. (Rt. 700) and Wakefield Rd (Rt. 82/305) 11674 Garfield Road, Hiram, OH 44234.
This interesting program will be presented by Dr. James Thompson as he focuses on James A. Garfield’s association with the village and Hiram College, along with exploring the leadership qualities that propelled Garfield into politics – including being elected 20th President of the United States.

Dr. James Thompson is Professor of Political Science at Hiram College and serves as Director of the J.A. Garfield Center for Public Leadership, also located at Hiram College.
The Garfield Trail, organized to promote the four major sites in northeast Ohio affiliated with the 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield: Moreland Hills (birth site), Hiram College (education), the James A. Garfield National Historic Site (Mentor farm), and Lake View Cemetery (final resting place), is a 501 (c) 3 organization that provides philanthropic support to, as well as increased awareness of, the four “cradle to grave” sites.
The founders of the group are Tim Garfield (great-great- grandson of President James A. Garfield), Carla Vondrak Garfield, Debbie Weinkamer, and Chris Weinkamer, with assistance of attorney Josh Strickland of Dworken & Bernstein, Co., L.P.A. in Painesville, Ohio. The Board of Trustees includes representatives from the four sites.
