LAST CALL!

Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary is still seeking contestants for the 4-Way Speech Contest ,  to be conducted locally  on March 10 at the McCumbers-Brady Realty on Main St. , Garrettsville.  Any students from Windham H.S. or James A. Garfield H.S., grades 9-12, are eligible to participate.  The local first-place prize winner will receive $100,  district-level winners will receive $750.  Every contestant will gain valuable experience and good stuff for a resume or an application.  The criteria to be addressed in the speech are : Is it the  TRUTH?  Is it FAIR to all concerned?  Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?  Interested persons should contact a Rotarian or a principal or a guidance counselor or a speech teacher…or anyone who can help them to take this big step on their road to success.

The club reaffirmed their support for the upcoming Portage Park District levy coming up in May—a world of outdoor adventure for less than one large pizza!

Congratulations went to the James A. Garfield Middle School Power of the Pen team for their excellent first place finish in the district competition and their second-place recognition at the regionals.  The club looks forward to hosting some of the members presenting their stories at a meeting some time soon.  The Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary sponsors the district competition, held at Garfield Middle School this year and last year and was thanked by team members and coach Jackie Lovelace.

Discussion on the possibilities involved in bringing changes to the local meeting time and location brought many thoughts and suggestion.  The discussion will go on.

Rachel Schwan is scheduled to leave for her year abroad as a Rotary International Student Exchange student in August.  The local club is investigating the amounts of stipends to be allocated to students who may be coming to the local area.  Members are canvassing other clubs who have hosted exchange students.

Thank you letters are going out to sponsors  of and contributors to this year’s successful Family Week activities.

For now, Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary meets in the Hiram College Dining Hall on Monday from 5:30p.m. to 7:00p.m.
