Since 2012, the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard (NGCC) has been a lifeline for families struggling with food insecurity. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the NGCC’s mission is simple yet profound: ensuring no one in the community goes hungry. Through its dedicated efforts, the NGCC distributes food every month to hundreds of families, many of whom never thought they would need the support of a food pantry.
While the NGCC partners with the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank to source some of its supplies, the majority of food and personal care items come from the generosity of local donors.
Volunteers are the backbone of NGCC’s operations, stepping in to pack grocery bags, unload deliveries, assist with client check-ins, and restock shelves. Each task, no matter how small, contributes to the organization’s mission of providing for families in need. Volunteering is a tangible way to make a difference, and the NGCC welcomes those who are ready to lend a helping hand.
Donations are equally vital to the NGCC’s success. The community’s kindness is evident in the wide array of food and personal care items contributed. Hamburger Helper, Tuna Helper, kidney beans, boxed side dishes, and staples like rice and pasta are always in demand. Other appreciated items include oatmeal, canned soup, crackers, peanut butter, and canned fruits and vegetables. Hygiene products like dish and bath soap and toiletries are also needed. Donations can be dropped off at the Garrettsville Family YMCA during operating hours. Those interested are encouraged to call ahead at 330-469-2044 to confirm their operating hours.
