An Invitation to Come Home for the Holidays

St. Joseph Parish in Mantua is offering a program to invite Catholics who are away from the practice of their faith to consider the Catholic Church in January/February 2014. Do you know a Catholic who no longer attends a Catholic church? Could you approach them in the manner of a committed Catholic and friend and offer an invitation to attend the first session of Awakening Faith on Jan 14th. Fish Dinner

Windham American Legion Post 674 Fish Fry – Friday nights from 4-7:30 pm, now through Lent. Fish, Chicken, Shrimp or combo dinners available, Also choice of two sides; Green Beans, Mac-n-Cheese, Coleslaw, Applesauce and Dessert. Cost is $8 per dinner, children under 5 eat free. Instrument Drive

The Windham Band is having an instrument drive over the next 2 months. We are seeking any used band instruments in good condition or donations toward the purchase of new instruments for the band program at Windham. The Hiram Wind Ensemble. If you played in your high school band, you will love playing in this group. If you need an instrument, we can probably help with that. We especially need Brass and Percussion players, but all are welcome (including faculty and community members). Rehearsals are Tuesday & Thursday from 4:30- 5:45pm (that’s less than 3 hours per week!) Frohring Recital Hall beginning Jan. 14. Come to rehearsal Tuesday to listen and meet Professor Young. Crestwood Band Citrus Sale

The Crestwood Band annual citrus sale runs now through Jan 22nd.   Proceeds from the sale will be used to support the Instrumental Music Departments in the Intermediate, Middle and High schools.  You can order three ways:  contact a Crestwood band member or 330-569-7613 or you can order online at www.doorstepdirect.org.  Please enter the school code OH11184 so we receive credit for the sale.  Crestwood Band Patrons have been conducting this sale to support the instrumental music programs for over 40 years. Bluegrass Junction

Bluegrass is back at Bluegrass Junction! The first show of 2014 will be held from 7-11pm on Jan 18th, at the Shalersville Town Hall, located on S.R. 44 at S.R. 303.  Doors open at 6 p.m. The event will feature three bands Coney Carver & the Rainbow Valley Boys, Red Dust Mountain Boys, and Southern Comfort. Pancakes at Hambden Grange

The Forgotten Preserves of Mantua

Tiny Mantua has three State Nature Preserves and a state designated Scenic River. Wow! Naturalist Bob Faber will lead this exploration of  the preserves, including the seldom-visited Tummonds Preserve southeast of the village, where we will view the river corridor and small lake that few people have had a chance to see. Meet at 1:00pm at the Village Park on the east side of Mantua on Mennonite Rd. adjacent to the river. Fee: $8 for members of the Friends of the Hiram College Field Station ($10 for non-members). Community Center Open

The Community Center at Mantua Center will be open 10:00 to 4:00 each Wednesday for the rest of January.  Get out of the house and meet some friends, old or new, at the old Mantua Center School, just north of SR 82 on Center Road.  Bring food to share for pot luck lunch at about noon.  Jigsaw puzzle, cards,  board games, and craft materials available, or bring your own portable project to work on.  If you need a ride, call Ellie at 330-274-0711.

For over a decade, our organization has been dedicated to making the spring and summer softball seasons fun and exciting for girls in the Mantua, Mantua Township, Hiram and Shalersville communities.  Come join us for another successful season of an activity that is fun, teaches sportsmanship, places team above self and helps to build character through hard work and determination. Ice Caves & Hot Toddies: Winter splendor at Nelson Ledges

Explore with naturalist Bob Faber crevasses, shelter caves, and rock bluffs that provide the setting for a variety of winter ice formations. Frozen waterfalls, ice stalagmites and stalactites, verglas, needle ice and perhaps ice flowers are all part of this winter geologic wonderland. The geology is both ancient and contemporary, rocks formations millions of years old frosted with ice formations that may be only hours old. Difficult and slippery. Meet at the Nelson Ledges parking lot Jan 25th from 2-4pm. After the hike we will retire to Mill in Garrettsville for a warm up sip of an adult beverage. Scotch Doubles

The Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre will hold their annual Scotch Doubles Bowling fundraiser on Feb 1st at Skylane Bowling Alley -registration is at 8:30 and bowling starts at 9pm. Pilates

Ravenna Recreation offers Pilates on Sundays and Wednesdays.  Classes will be held from 5-6 p.m. from Feb 2nd to Feb 26th at Tower Lodge in John Tontimonia City Park.  Participants should bring a water bottle and a mat.  Class fee is $32 for city taxpayers and $37 for non-city taxpayers or an $8.00 drop in fee.  This four week program will strengthen your abdominal muscles, increase your flexibility and improve your overall muscle tone and posture. Tae Kwon Do

New session of Tae Kwon Do will be held from Feb 4th to Feb 27th at Lake Hodgson – Apco Lodge in Ravenna for ages 7 years to adults, male or female.  Tae Kwon Do emphasizes self-discipline, exercise, and martial art skills.  Instructors work with students individually and as a group on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  Participants must have a mouth piece on first night.  Male students are required to wear protective gear after the second week.
