Free food, fun and haircuts being offered 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Townhall II Integrated Health Network will be hosting its 2nd annual community picnic on Thursday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The picnic will be held at the Hometown Bank Plaza in downtown Kent. If the weather does not cooperate, the event will take place in the Townhall II parking lot under tents at 155 N. Water Street in Kent.

They keystone of the event will be a performance of “The Sound of Recovery: Music and Message” by singer/songwriter Marc Lee Shannon at noon. Shannon may be most recognizable for his work with local legend Michael Stanley and his band the Resonators, with which he performed for 25 years. Shannon’s latest album, “Lucky 7,” is honoring his seven years of sobriety.

“Seven years ago, I had a sense that I could have a better life,” Shannon writes in the liner notes of “Lucky 7.” “I was broken, beaten and lost, with no faith in my future. Through medical treatment and the miracle of a healing community, I got another chance to live.”

A passionate advocate for addiction recovery, Shannon authored the monthly column, “Sober Chronicles,” for The Devil Strip. His podcast, “Recovery Talks, The Podcast,” features people who freely share their sobriety and mental health journeys and is available at recoverytalks.org.

Hamburgers, hotdogs and vegetarian options will be served all afternoon along with s’mores and ice cream donated by Frank’s Ice Cream and apples donated by Beckwith Orchards. There will be games and music and free haircuts all afternoon.
