Garrettsville – The James A. Garfield Historical Society met on November 18, 2013 in the historic Mott Building for their regular monthly meeting to conduct the following business :

The historical marker grant commemorating the 1935 train robbery in Garrettsville has been approved by the Ohio Historical Society.  Julie Thompson, who spearheaded the local effort through her senior “capstone” project at Hiram College, has acted as liaison to the OHS  and estimates that the marker may be in place by May near the Headwaters Bike and Hike Trail, by S&K Sales and Service. Fund-raising to secure the necessary dollars for its completion is on-going.  Interested contributors may contact any member of the JAGHS.

The Mott Building will be open from 10 to 2 on December 7 for the usual monthly open house on the first Saturday of the month.

The front window decoration for the holiday period will be done by Cindy Matson and Becky Moser.

Progress is being made on getting a stone and veteran’s marker for Daniel Ellinworth, who participated in the War of 1812 and is buried in the old cemetery on Maple Ave. in Garrettsville.  A direct descendent has been found to make the official request through the Veterans’ Administration.  This has been a project of Judy Thornton and she’s seeing it through.

The annual Christmas party will be at Cal’s on December 16 at 6:00.

The Hat Shoppe apartment is now rented.

Barbara Klock Hardesty made a donation of a clock (!) from the Baxter Coal Company, once a thriving—and necessary—business in Garrettsville.  Donations of local interest are welcome at any time, especially with accompanying stories and recollections of their connection to history of the community.

The James A. Garfield Historical Society meets in the Mott Building on every third Monday of the month.  New members are always welcome.

Start thinking Christmas Walk 2014.
