3rd Annual Turkey Walk / Run

Come out and join us Thanksgiving morning for the 3rd Annual  Brimfield 1 Mile/5-K Turkey Walk/Run through local neighborhoods – strollers, wagons and pets welcome! “Diving Into Nature!”

Don’t take the kids shopping on Black Friday. Take them outside! On Nov 29 from 1-4 pm  children (ages 8-12) will have fun exploring nature and learning how to observe and describe the world around them. Each participant will make their own nature journal and practice using it to help them become keen observers of their surroundings. Nature discoveries will be creatively recorded in the journals through writing, drawing, and crafts. Families are invited to join us at the end of the program as we share our discoveries while warming up by a campfire. Fee: $8 per participant. Christmas at the Barnhisel House

The public is invited to Christmas at the Barnhisel House at 1011 N. State Street, Nov 30th Dec 1st, 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th from1-5pm. The theme is “Dolls and Bears”.  Visitors will see a variety of bears and dolls displayed all through the historic Barnhisel estate. Refreshments, Christmas music on the organ and guides dressed in period costume will welcome guests to the event. Scotch Doubles Fundraiser for the Tim Deverick Family will be Nov 30th at 9pm at Skylane Bowling Alley. All proceeds will go to the family for medical and funeral expenses/ time lost his battle with cancer Nov 4th. Author Les Roberts

On Dec 3rd at 6:30 pm, Author Les Roberts will be at the Burton Public Library. Les Roberts is the author of 17 mystery novels featuring Cleveland private investigator Milan Jacovich, as well as 11 other books of fiction. He came to mystery writing after a 24-year career in Hollywood writing and producing television shows. A native of Chicago, he now lives in Northeast Ohio. Book signing will follow the program with books available for purchase. Seating is limited to 50.

 

Christmas TV History

Community Center Open

The Community Center at Mantua Center will be open on Wednesdays December 4, 11, and 18. Coffee and tea are always available, as are a jigsaw puzzle to help construct, a choice of board games, and a variety of craft materials and books for kids.   We have a potluck lunch at about noon, and we always seem to have a good variety of food to share.  People enjoy sitting and chatting, or working on various projects they bring, such as quilt piecing, scrapbooking, and crocheting.  Most afternoons there are groups playing cards.  Hours are 10am to 4pm, reopening for a 7pm yoga class.  Enter the south entrance of the single story addition behind the old Mantua Center School, just north of SR82 on Center Rd.  We will be closed on Dec. 25, and Jan. 1 because of holidays.   Contact Susan Buckles at 724-544-6881 or Carol Srajer at 330-562-8869 if you need more information.

 

Christmas Meeting

The Portage County Council of the American Legion Auxiliary will hold its Christmas meeting at Ravenna Unit no. 331 on Dec 5th. Reservations for the free lunch at 6:30pm should be made with Norma Mounts 330-297-5123. In lieu of gift exchange, members are asked to bring a gift for ladies at the women’s shelter. Gifts should be unopened and in a gift bag. No candles or alcohol will be accepted.

Blues DeVille to Play

Christmas Parade

Ravenna Balloon A-Fair’s annual lighted Christmas Parade “Treasures Under The Tree” will take place downtown Ravenna on Main Street at 7 pm. on Dec 7th. Line up begins at 6pm at the corner of Main Street & Myrtle and at East Plaza parking lot. The parade includes themed floats, dancing and marching groups. Leading off the parade will be the Ravenna High School Band under the direction of Drew Adametz.  Santa Claus straight from the North Pole will arrive on a Ravenna Fire Truck. Local youngsters will have a chance to share their Christmas wishes with Santa following the parade at the Buckeye Mini Mall, located at 250 E. Toy Drop Off

On Dec 7th from 9-1 there will be a toy drop off at Cole Valley Chevrolet. Toys and donations will be for the children of Newton Falls. All donations stay in Newton Falls. Please help make a Christmas for our needy kids.

Chinese Auction

New Mercies Community Church at the corner of Butternut and Aquilla roads is holding a Chinese auction on Dec 7th. Doors open at 4pm, auction starts at 6pm. Admission is $5 with 25 bidding tickets and $3 each additional sheet some of the prizes include a $250 grand walk in kitchen donated by step 2 a girls bike, a $50 cleats gift card and a $75 cheese basket from Cabot’s, along with over 300 other wonderful items. Christmas Bazaar

The Girard Junior Women present the annual Christmas Bazaar on Dec 7th from 10-2pm. The Christmas Bazaar includes a baked goods sale, a gifts table at kid friendly prices, free games and a coloring contest. St. Ambrose Christmas Concert

Hidden in Plain Sight

Hidden in Plain Sight, an awareness program for parents and other adults will be held Dec 10th at Crestwood High School in Mantua. Doors open at 7:15 and presentation will begin at 7:30. There will be an astonishing, interactive exhibit designed to resemble a teenager’s bedroom, which contains 150+ items which may be indicative of risky behaviors such as substance use, violence, eating disorders, juvenile crime, technology, risky games/challenges and more accompanies by a PowerPoint presentation and discussion. Hiram College Cheer Camp

Kids from ages 5-12 can learn cheers and a dance from the Hiram College Cheerleaders and cheer at half-time on Dec 14th. Check in is 9:45 in the Colman Sports Center Lobby, and camp begins at 10am in the Martin Field House, game to follow at 3pm at the Charles A. Angel Shoppe Craft Shop

The Angel Shoppe Craft Show and Santa Shoppe will be Dec 14th from 10 am to 3 pm at Huntsburg Congregational Church, 12435 Madison Road, Huntsburg.  A variety of craft and vendor tables will be there. Children should bring their gift shopping list so they can shop with our help from our adult elf, their purchases will be wrapped to remain a surprise. Live Nativity

The Hambden Congregational Church located at 13840 G.A.R. Highway, Hambden Twp., Ohio 44024 invites you and your family to come and witness a live outdoor nativity on Dec 14th from 5-8pm.  See   Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, shepherds, Wisemen, and live animals. Come inside and view numerous Nativity sets on display inside our original historical Sanctuary. Then continue the journey to see other   biblical scenes throughout the church building.   Don’t forget to stop in our fellowship hall, where there is a children’s craft center, and free refreshments. Chinese Auction

The Garfield Band Boosters will be having a Chinese Auction on Dec 15th from 2-4 pm during our “Sounds of the Season” winter concerts.  The auction is open to the public and will be held at Garfield High School.  Please also join us for some great holiday music as the high school concert band and choir will perform at 2 pm followed by the middle school concert at 4 pm.   Between concerts, light refreshments will be served and the high school “Swing Machine” jazz band will perform.  All Garfield band concerts are free and open to the public.

Longest Night Service for Those Who Mourn

The holidays are full of peppy music, colorful desserts, and brightly wrapped gifts.  But the holidays can be difficult when you miss someone at your holiday table.  December 21st is the longest night of the year and represents the long, dark night of mourning.  Join us at the Windham United Methodist Church, 9051 N. Main St. Windham OH, at 7 pm for a time to remember those you’ve lost, and take a moment in the quiet of winter to honor them.  All are welcome.

 

An Invitation to Come Home for the Holidays

St. Joseph Parish in Mantua is offering a program to invite Catholics who are away from the practice of their faith to consider the Catholic Church in January/February 2014. Do you know a Catholic who no longer attends a Catholic church? Could you approach them in the manner of a committed Catholic and friend and offer an invitation to attend the first session of Awakening Faith on Jan 14th.
