Check Out GCPL’s Free Online Programs

The wintery weather may keep you stuck at home, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be bored. The grey skies, short days, and cold temperatures don’t have to get you down. Not when the Geauga County Public Library has so many online programs to help chase away the winter doldrums.

If one of your new year’s resolutions is to become craftier, why not learn how to use some of GCPL’s MakerSpace equipment? Attend online training to learn to use GCPL’s equipment, including a large format printer & cutter, Cricut and heat press, UV printer, CNC machine, laser engraver and more. After training, you can head to one of their MakerSpace locations to complete whatever projects you can dream up – just don’t forget your library card!

For history buffs, GCPL has you covered. The Garfield Historical Society has several programs, including ‘The Life of Frederick Douglass’ on February 3rd or ‘The Network to Freedom,’ program about the Underground Railroad on February 10th. You can learn about, ‘The History of Chagrin Falls Park’ on February 13th, thanks to John Bourisseau from the Chagrin Falls Historical Society. You won’t want to miss, ‘Going There and Knowing There,” a program on MLK and Cleveland’s place in the Civil Rights Movement on February 27th.

Outdoor enthusiasts can log in on February 21st to learn more about Ohio’s Emma Gatewood. Gatewood became the first American hiking celebrity in 1955 when, at age 67, she left home for a walk. 2,168 miles later, she became the first women to hike the Appalachian Trail solo and in a single season. “Grandma” Gatewood went on to hike the AT twice more and was a founding member of Ohio’s Buckeye Trail Association.

If you’ve been meaning to join a book club, you can try it out from the comfort of home on February 22nd. This month’s selection is ‘The Cartographers,” by Peng Shepherd. Books vary each month in topic and include fiction and nonfiction selections, so why not check it out? Lastly, teens from sixth grade through senior year can play Dungeons & Dragons online using ROLL20. Space is available on February 13th and 27th and throughout the winter months.

To find out more or to register, visit geaugalibrary.net and click on the Programs & Events tab. From there, you can view the online calendar to see the free programs available at each GCPL branch as well as the online offerings to keep your spirits up until the temperature rises.
