The Halloween season may be particularly difficult for families of those with developmental disabilities because of social cues, disruptions in routine, loud sounds and costumes. On Oct. 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Portage County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ (DD) Happy Day Services Building, families in Portage County can trick-or-treat in an accessible and safe setting.

“We are happy to provide a safe and comfortable environment for those with developmental disabilities,” Tim Torch, communications and human resource manager, said. “Many are not aware of how to include everyone in their activities, and we want to provide an environment that can do just that.”

The event takes place at 2500 Brady Lake Road in Ravenna, Ohio. Everyone is encouraged to join in the fun, including grandparents, siblings, parents and caretakers. It is open to individuals of all ages, both children and adults. Trunk or Treat is also a complimentary event. Upon arrival, attendees will be provided with a free drawstring bag for collecting candy.

This event offers a secure and inclusive atmosphere with participation from community members and partners. It is also designed to be accessible for strollers, wagons and wheelchairs, ensuring that everyone can join in the festivities.

The Portage County Board of DD is encouraging local resources to help share information and participate. They also encourage participants to bring hygiene supplies to help with the charitable event. The organization is collecting supplies to donate to the Miller Community House.
