Holiday Meal Volunteers Needed

The Geauga County Department on Aging will once again offer a traditional holiday meal  to any Geauga County Seniors, age sixty (60) and older, who will be home and alone on Thanksgiving Day, November 28nd and/or Christmas Day, December 25th.

We are looking for friendly volunteers to deliver a hot holiday meal to the senior’s home and spend a little time on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas day.

Stephens Memorial Observatory Open

Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will be open to the public on Nov 9th from 7-9 pm. Visitors can stop in for a look at the “island universe” known as the Great Andromeda Galaxy (M31). Thought for a long time to be a bright nebula, it was only in the 20th century that modern astronomers determined M31 to be a galaxy separate and distant from our own — the first known to science. Also planned are views of collections of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy: the Perseus Double Cluster, and the Pleiades or “Seven Sisters.”  The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. Windham Softball & Baseball Casino Trip

The Windham Softball and Baseball teams are sponsoring a bus trip to Presque Isle in Erie, PA. All proceeds  benefit the building of the baseball / softball field. St. Anselm Christmas Boutique

St. Anselm Christmas Boutique will be Nov 9, from 9am-4pm.  St. Anselm’s Women’s Guild will hold its Annual Christmas Boutique at St. Anselm Church, 13013 Chillicothe Rd., Chesterland. There will be over 80 vendors from the area who will be displaying their specialties. Take a break from shopping and stop at the snack bar or the bake sale for delicious homemade goodies. Your $1.00 donation for admission entitles you to a chance to win a door prize throughout the day. There will also be a Chinese Raffle with several great prizes. Tickets are 3 for $1.00. Texas Hold’em Tournament

A Texas Hold’em tournament will be held Nov 9th beginning at 5pm at the Kent Elks Lodge, 2265 E. Erie St in Ravenna. The benefit is sponsored by State Farm Agent Greg Rodi, proceeds will go to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation via Team Alaina. Alaina is a 9 year old 4th grader at Southeast; she was diagnosed at 23 months. All her family and friends strive to raise funds and awareness for the cause. Food and beverages will be provided. There will be a large Chinese auction as well as a 50/50 raffle. To begin $50 gets $25,000 in starting chips. All pre-registered players receive and extra $5,000 in chips. Annual Holiday Craft Show

Crestwood 4 C’s annual Holiday Craft Show will be held Nov 9th at the Shalersville Town Hall corner of routes 44 and 303. Local crafts people occupy all tables. The event takes place from 9-3 pm. Admission is free. Each item of canned food entitles the bearer to a free door prize ticket. Door prizes are awarded every hour. The winner needs to be present. There is a grand prize of a $100 gift certificate to Giant Eagle (The winner does not need to be present). Door prize tickets are 50 cents apiece or 3 for $1.00. One free raffle ticket is given for every food item donated to stock the 4 C’s Emergency Food Cupboard. Quilt tickets will be available at $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Ellie Monroe does “Quilts for Causes” and she has made another beautiful queen sized quilt to benefit 4 C’s. Dramatic Scripture Presentation

Mosher, Professor of Voice at the Dana School of Music, Youngstown State University will be sharing a “Dramatic Scripture Presentation” on Sunday, November 10 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 2640 South Canal Street, Newton Falls.  Dr. Mosher has memorized the entire Gospel of Mark and will be offering a 30-minute dramatic rendering from portions of this Scripture text.  All are welcome to attend.  Host pastor is Rev. The 5-acre Hiram School property located on Bancroft Street has been purchased by the Village of Hiram and designated as Hiram School Parl. What would you like to see on this park space? Community Center Open

The Community Center at Mantua Center will be open on Wednesdays November 13 and 20 and December 4, 11, and 18. Coffee and tea are always available, as are a jigsaw puzzle to help construct, a choice of board games, and a variety of craft materials and books for kids.   We have a potluck lunch at about noon, and we always seem to have a good variety of food to share.  People enjoy sitting and chatting, or working on various projects they bring, such as quilt piecing, scrapbooking, and crocheting.  Most afternoons there are group’s playing cards.  Hours are 10am to 4pm, reopening for a 7pm yoga class.  Enter the south entrance of the single story addition behind the old Mantua Center School, just north of SR82 on Center Rd.  We will be closed on Nov. 6 because of election the day before, and on Nov. 27, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1 because of holidays.  If participation continues to be good we will announce January openings in mid-December.  Contact Susan Buckles at 724-544-6881 or Carol Srajer at 330-562-8869 if you need more information.

Spend the evening at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium to support regional efforts to protect wildlife, with special focus on the exciting regional work to protect the Spotted Turtles! The WildNite4WildLife: Northeast Ohio Wildlife Benefit will be held Nov 15th from 6-9 pm, with tickets available through http://wild4ever.org. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $16 for children, with age 2 and under free – just a nickel more expensive than general admission to the aquarium, but all will go to benefit a good cause!

 

Talent Show & Fundraiser

Join us for a night if special performances by students as they ally in support of their classmate, 5th grader Mathieu Arotin and his family. Mathieu has Spinal Muscular Atrophy type II and is confined to a power wheelchair. All donations and proceeds from the night will go towards assisting the Arotin Family in purchasing a modified van.

On Dec 3rd at 6:30 pm, Author Les Roberts will be at the Burton Public Library! Les Roberts is the author of 17 mystery novels featuring Cleveland private investigator Milan Jacovich, as well as 11 other books of fiction. He came to mystery writing after a 24-year career in Hollywood writing and producing television shows. A native of Chicago, he now lives in Northeast Ohio. Book signing will follow the program with books available for purchase. Seating is limited to 50.

Hidden in Plain Sight

Hidden in Plain Sight, an awareness program for parents and other adults will be held Dec 10th at Crestwood High School in Mantua. Doors open at 7:15 and presentation will begin at 7:30. There will be an astonishing, interactive exhibit designed to resemble a teenager’s bedroom, which contains 150+ items which may be indicative of risky behaviors such as substance use, violence, eating disorders, juvenile crime, technology, risky games/challenges bad more accompanies by a PowerPoint presentation and discussion. Holiday Decoration

Hiram College Cheer Camp

Kids from ages 5-12 can learn cheers and a dance from the Hiram College Cheerleaders and cheer at half-time on Dec 14th. Check in is 9:45 in the Colman Sports Center Lobby, and camp begins at 10am in the Martin Field House, game to follow at 3pm at the Charles A. Henry Field Cost is $45 for the camp; add an additional $6 to eat lunch with the Hiram Cheerleaders.  A check written to Hiram College can be mailed to:  Terry Clutter Athletic Dept. P.O.
