4-H is Much More than Livestock: 2023 County and State Sewing Winners

Portage County 4-H Clothing Judging and 4-H Fashion Revue is held annually to choose those who go on to represent Portage County at the State 4-H Fashion Revue in Columbus, which takes place at the Ohio State Fair. Members are judged on construction, fit, fashion, design, grooming, posture and poise, personable qualities, project book completion and interview with judges. Members then model their projects for the judges, family, friends, and the public. 

The winners for each of the classes and their clubs include:

Sew Fun Jr. 1st place and State Fair Delegate, Hadley Whittlesey (Edinburg Seambusters); 2nd place and State Fair Alternate, Bailey Gampo (Edinburg Seambusters); 3rd place, Lillian Brunswick (Edinburg Seambusters); 4th place, Addie Fox (Edinburg Seambusters); 5th place, Penelope Rensel (Edinburg Seambusters).

Sew Fun Sr.  1st place and State Fair Delegate, Natalie Kemble (Edinburg Seambusters).

Terrific Tops 1st place and State Fair Delegate, Julianna Kisamore (Edinburg Seambusters); 2nd place and State Fair Alternate, Penelope Reinsel (Edinburg Seambusters).  

Sundresses and Jumpers 1st place and State Fair Delegate, Ava Fox (Edinburg Seambusters); 2nd place and State Fair Alternate, Ivy Klazon (Edinburg Seambusters); 3rd place, Julia Shanahan (Edinburg Seambusters).

Clothes for High School and College 1st place and State Fair Delegate, Olivia Buckel (Edinburg Seambusters); 2nd place and State Fair Selection Alternate-Violet Reese (Critter Getters).  

Shopping Savvy Jr. 1st place and State Fair Delegate, Jenna Canale (Edinburg Seambusters).

Quilting the Best Better 1st place and State Fair Delegate, Dakota Mansfield (Rootstown Small Ones); 2nd place and State Fair Alternate-Nora Fanizzi (Edinburg Seambusters); 3rd place, Josie Smith (Edinburg Seambusters).

Quilting- Self-Determined 1st place and State Fair Selection Winner- Clair Rice (Rootstown Small Ones).

The Laundry Project 1st place and State Fair Selection Winner – Ava Fox ( Edinburg Seambusters).

Cora Riemenschneider, 11, of the Edinburg Seambusters 4-H Club won the highest county award for 4-H sewing, the Patricia G. Rohal Memorial Champion of Champions Award when she made a plaid wool cape and wool dress slacks for her mother in the category, “Sew for Others Jr”.

Special Construction Awards were presented to beginner sewers- Hadley Whittlesey and Bailey Gampo- Edinburg Seambusters 4-H club; and intermediate sewers- Cora Riemenschneider and Jenna Canale – Edinburg Seambusters.                

County nominees for special state awards included:  Audrey Landis – Master Clothing Educator Award Sr; Eliza Kisamore- Master Clothing Educator Award Jr; Cora Riemenschneider -Ohio Fashion Revue Award; Julianna Kisamore- Rising Star Award. 

All Portage County winners traveled to the Ohio State Fair and competed in their respective categories against entries from all other Ohio county winners on August 1st and 2nd. Portage County sewers had a wonderful time at the Ohio State Fair and many were recognized as State Outstanding of the Day Winners (Top 20% of their project class) and State Clock Trophy Winners (Top in Ohio for their project class). 

Cora Riemenschneider, 11, in addition to the Champion of Champions Award, Cora was awarded Outstanding Construction Award and was nominated for the Ohio Fashion Revue Award.  At the State 4-H Fashion Revue, Cora won an Outstanding of the Day Award, the Daily Wool Award, and was a finalist for the Ohio Fashion Revue Award. In addition to her sewing awards, Cora won an Outstanding of the Day Award for her money management project “Becoming Money Wise” and an Outstanding of the Day Award for Public Speaking in a team illustrated talk with Ava Fox also winning the State Clock Trophy for best Jr team talk in the State.

Jenna Canale, 13, of the Edinburg Seambusters won an Outstanding of the Day Award and the State Clock Trophy Award for 1st place in the entire state in the category “Clothes for Middle School” an intermediate sewing project with her striped denim jeans, knit vest, and white long sleeve top. 

Jenna also won an Outstanding of the Day Award for her “Shopping Savvy Jr.” project a consumer clothing project focusing on learning to be a savvy shopper. Jenna won the State Consumer Clothing Award.  In addition, Jenna won an Outstanding of the Day Award for her leadership project, “Club Leadership 1”.

Claire Rice, 13, of Rootstown Small Ones won an Outstanding of the Day Award and the State Clock Trophy Award for her “Quilting- Self-Determined” project. 

Hadley Whittlesey, age 10, won an Outstanding of the Day Award for her “Sew Fun – Jr” project. 

Natalie Kemble, age 14, won an Outstanding of the Day Award for her “Sew Fun – Sr” project. 

Julianna Kisamore, age 9, won an Outstanding of the Day Award for her “Terrific Tops” project and was also the Portage County Nominee for the Ohio Rising Star Award. 

Eliza Kisamore, age 13, won an Outstanding of the Day Award for her “Loungewear – Jr” project. She was also the Portage County Nominee for the Ohio Master Clothing Educator Junior Award. 

All these projects will be on display at the Portage County Randolph Fair from Tuesday August 22 through Sunday August 27th.
