Martin S. Marks, (Marty), age 65, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at his home under hospice care following a lengthy illness. Martin was born July 20, 1958 in Bedford, Ohio and grew up in Garrettsville. Growing up, he enjoyed the outdoors, camping, and Boy Scouts and earned the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout. Martin very much loved the Garfield High science club and was was part of the inaugural group in the 1970’s. He graduated from James A. Garfield High School in 1976 and The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Agronomy Sciences in 1989. During his college years, Martin met Maura MacDonagh and they married September 1993 in Duxbury, Massachusetts, Maura’s hometown. They continued to live and work there and neighboring towns all their lives.
While beginning their lives in Massachusetts, Marty and Maura, started their own business called “Garden Environments”, providing various landscape, planting and patio/pool design services. They closed the business after many years and Martin went to work for “Duxbury Gardeners” until his illness in 2021. Martin was a very skilled and talented landscaper and craftsman with an expertise in stonework for backyards, pools and patios
Martin was an avid football fan and enjoyed watching all the games, but always a loyal fan of the New England Patriots and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He and his wife Maura loved planting and harvesting their vegetable garden annually. His backyard was full of beautiful trees and flowers where they enjoyed many days and evenings grilling dinner and eating outside with their dog.
Martin is survived by his siblings David (Sharon), Westfield, MA; Susan, Wellington, FL; Brenda, Dade City, FL; John (Lauriel), Beavercreek, OH; Jane (Jack), Orlando, FL; Robert (Lisa), Milan, OH; Julie (Chris), Streetsboro, OH; and his loyal Golden Retriever, Andy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maura (September 2022), mother, Elizabeth (Betty) (1995), father, Emery (1996) and his beloved Golden Retrievers, Barney and Benny.
Per Martin’s wishes, cremation has taken place and his remains will lay in rest with his beloved wife, Maura at the beautiful and historic Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury, Massachusetts. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the very compassionate team of nurses and caregivers at Cranberry Hospice, Plymouth, MA. Also, a very special thank-you to Marty’s brother-in-law, Colin MacDonagh, for his devoted long-term care and and companionship during this most difficult time
