Celebrate the 4th in Hiram

Hiram – The Village of Hiram will once again be celebrating the 4th with a variety of family-friendly activities this year. “The festivities have been low key since the pandemic,” shared event volunteer Marilane Spencer. “We’re hoping to revive the 4th of July Spirit in the Village this year,” she shared.

To raise funds for the family-friendly events, the Hiram 4th of July committee is selling commemorative July 4th T-shirts. The design was created by local artist Libby Frato-Sweeney. Shirts are available in both children’s and adult sizes and are available at the Village Bookstore, the Hiram Inn, or outside the Hiram Post Office on Saturdays from 9 am through noon while supplies last. Children’s shirts are $10, and adult S/M/L are $15, w/ XL at $20. For more information, call Marilane at (330)734-5899.

The festivities begin on Monday, July 3rd at 8 pm with Swifty the Clown who will fashion balloon animals. The Health Helicopter will be landing, giving kids of all ages the opportunity to meet the pilots, ask questions, and see the interior of the aircraft. Concessions will also be available. At 9 pm as darkness falls, Lorne Vines will sing the National Anthem. At 9:15, the fireworks display takes place, made possible by a grant from the Hiram Fire Department.

On Tuesday, July 4th, a softball game will be held at Jagow Field. All are welcome to participate – the game begins at 9:30 am. At 10:30 am, the Hiram Police Department will hold their annual Bike Rodeo in the Hiram Christian Church parking lot. Afterwards, participants are encouraged to decorate their bicycles and join in the 4th of July parade, which steps off at noon.

Immediately following the parade, attendees are invited to attend a potluck lunch at 12:30 pm at Hiram College’s Gerstacker Green on Dean Street. A variety of kids games will take place as well. The fun continues at 4 pm, with the volunteer Hiram Community Band Performance at the Frohring Building on Dean Street.

If you’re a baker, don’t forget to drop off your pie on July 4th between 5:30 – 6:30 pm for the annual Pie Contest. Entries should be dropped off at the Gerstacker Arch. Pies will be judged in three categories: taste, appearance, and creativity for the opportunity to win awards and bragging rights for your culinary skills. If you need more information on the pie contest, contact Anne at (440) 708-6877 or Ellen at (330) 357-1498.

Pies will be sold by the slice at the Big Band Performance, Dance & Ice Cream Social at 7:30 pm, helping raise funds for the holiday festivities. The Garrettones will be performing at the evening event, so you won’t want to miss it!
