Mantua – The Mantua Historical Society will begin a project to improve the preservation and accessibility of its historical records through an inventory and the purchase of archival quality storage supplies. This project is supported in part by an award from the Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board, through funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), National Archives and Records Administration.
This project will be the first step in an effort to gain a better understanding of the contents of the collections, make preservation enhancements, and to make these materials more widely known and accessible to the public. Once the collections are organized and in their permanent storage, a finding aid will be created to make these materials more readily accessible to researchers and the general public. MHS aims to engage in a digitization effort in the future to further preserve and make records more accessible to those who are not local. MHS collections include records of Mantua Center School (on the National Register of Historic Places) and Mantua Township School from as early as 1888; the newspapers The Mantua Record (later Record-News) and the Record Courier (1913-1985); materials related to former President James A. Garfield, who preached next door at the Mantua Center Christian Church; and various records and memorabilia from prominent and founding Mantua families and business owners, among other records significant to Mantua residents and the northeast Ohio region.
The Mantua Historical Society is a 501(c)3 organization incorporated on May 19, 1975 with a mission to preserve, share, and educate the public about the history of Mantua Village and Mantua Township. The Society operates a museum located on the second floor of the Mantua Township Town Hall building in the Mantua Center Historic District off of Twinsburg-Warren Road (St. Rt. 82). The museum is open to visitors on Thursdays, 10 am to noon or by appointment.
