FREE Hunter Safety Course
Register Now
Register now for FREE Hunter Safety Course with Ravenna Parks and Recreation.  The state of Ohio requires first time hunters to complete a hunter safety course before purchasing a license.  Upon passing the written exam, a certification card will be mailed to you.  This three-night course will cover topics including: firearm safety, wildlife laws, conservation, and personal safety.  There will be 3 sessions offered : Sept 20-22; Oct 4-6 and Oct 18-20.  All sessions are from 6:30 – 10 p.m. Classes will be held at the Apco Lodge at Lake Hodgson, 5089  Lakewood Rd., Ravenna.  This course is FREE and participants must attend all three nights.  Please bring a pencil.   Participants  11 years old and under must be accompanied by an adult.  Pre-registration is a must.  Pre-register with Ravenna Recreation at (330) 296-2864    8 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4:15 p.m. weekdays.

Freedom Township Brush Pick up
1st Monday of Month
Freedom Township will be doing the monthly brush pickup the first Monday of the month. Residents must call 330-527-4094 or 330 527-7414 prior to 8 am Monday morning to arrange for pickup.  Twigs, branches and brush (no garbage) will be picked up curbside.

2011 Lake Milton Farmers Market is now open.  The market will run every Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. through October.  The market is located at the Lake Milton Amphitheater, located just north of the swim beach and south of the dam on Grandview Road.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Garrettsville’s Farmers Market

The 2011 Garrettsville’s Farmers Market will run on Wednesdays  through October 5, 2011. The location will be in the Skylanes Bowling Alley parking lot, located at the intersection of Liberty and Windham Streets (SR82). The market will run from 3:00 pm – 6:30 pm. Swim With The Hiram College Water Dogs

Registration is underway for Hiram College Swim Lessons. In person sign ups will be held on Sat. Sept 10th form 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Hiram College Pool.  You can also register online  through September 9th  at http://www.hiram.edu/athletics/menssports/swim/lessons.html   Classes will be held on Sundays beginning Sept 11 and run for 5 weeks.   Cost is $50 per child. Anime and manga lovers, attend the Anime/Manga Club on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Newton Falls Library. The next meeting is on August 27 at 2 pm. All are welcome.  Students under 16 years of age need to bring a signed permission slip. Enjoy several episodes of an anime, and discuss new and interesting manga. No registration is required. The Orange Community Education & Recreation Department is hosting an Antique & Collectible Flea Market on Saturday, August 27, 2011.  The event will take place on the grounds of the Orange Senior Center at 32000 Chagrin Blvd in Pepper Pike from 10:00am to 3:00pm.  The Antique & Collectible Flea Market will feature antiques, collectibles, crystal, china, furniture, books, vintage apparel, hats and handbags, costumes, kitchen wares, collector plates, dolls and bears, toys, tools, vintage dolls, clothing and accessories, artwork, frames, glassware, ceramics and everything else!   The event will be free to the public.

Harvest Point Church Luau

For the second year, Harvest Point Church in Lordstown, Ohio will host their community outreach Luau on Sunday, August 28, 2011, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. This FREE event will be held in the 4-Corners Park located at the intersection of Tod Ave. and Salt Springs Rd.  Fun activities will be available for children, family photos will again be available, and 95.5 The Fish will be bringing additional games, music, and the Fishmobile to this year’s event.  Various food items will be offered throughout the afternoon and many prize drawings will be conducted.  This is a fun-filled FREE afternoon for local families.  All are welcome.

Library Closed For Labor Day

All branches and offices of Portage County District Library will be closed on Monday, September 5, in observance of  Labor Day. They will resume regular operating hours on Tuesday, September 6.

Garfield Band Booster Meeting

The Garfield Band Boosters will meet on Tuesday, Sept 6th at 7pm in the high school band room.  The boosters support our bands at all levels including the Intermediate School, Middle School and High School.  All band parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Volunteers are needed to chaperone trips and games, work in the concession stand and help with other fundraising activities.  Please come and get involved!

Chicken Dinner

The Southington United Methodist Church, Routes 305 & 534 will be holding a Chicken dinner on Sept 7th from 3:30 pm – 6 p.m.  The menu includes 1?4 chickem, scalloped potatoes, green beans, applesauce, cole slaw, homemade desserts and beverage.  Adults $7.50; Children 4-10 $4. Chamber Photo Contest

The Garrettsville Area Chamber of Commerce is holding a photo contest for their 3rd Annual Calendar. This year’s theme will be “Unique Area Architecture”. This would include barns / monuments / bridges  and  buildings. We are looking for things such as unique designs on barns, stained glass, carvings etc. Each submission will require two (2) photographs.  One photo will be an up close shot of a unique aspect of the building / structure and the second will be a full shot of the building / structure. Friends of Melana Murder Mystery Night

Friends of Melana are hosting a murder mystery dinner at the K of C Hall in Mantua on September 10, 2011, with the doors opening at 6pm. Tickets are $25 each which includes the catered dinner and the drama. Tickets are on sale now at Millers Restaurant and Huntington Bank in Garrettsville. The drama is being performed by the Curtains-Up Theatre and will be an interactive performance. Mantua Potato Stomp Race and Fun Run

The 33rd Annual 9-mile potato stomp race and 1-mile run run are planned in conjunction with the Mantua Potato Festival.  The races will be run on Saturday morning, September 10th.  The one-mile fun run will begin at 8:30am and the 9-mile race will begin at 9am.  Both start at Crestwood High School.  If you pre-register,  fees for the 9 mile race are $13/$18 (no shirt/shirt) and for the fun run $5/$13 (no shirt/ shirt).  For race day registration the fees for the 9 mile race are $15/$20 (no shirt/shirt) and for the fun run fees are $8/$15 (no shirt/shirt).   Registration opens at 7am the day of the race.  For more information, call Advanced Rehab at 330-274-2747

Civil War Encampment

The James A Garfield National Historic Site will be holding a Civil War Encampmenbt on Sept 10th from 11 am – 4 pm and Sept 11th from 11 am – 4 pm. This event is located at 8095 Mentor Ave, Mentor, OH and is Free of charge!  Watch USA, USCT and CSA reenactment units march, drill and fire their weapons. Kids are invited to participate in  special drill instruction! Tour the Garfield home.

Spiderday!

Spiderday will be held on  Saturday, September 10 – drop in anytime from 1 to 4 p.m. at the West Woods, Turkey Ridge Shelter, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87), Russell Township.  Children will make a yummy marshmallow spider, catch plastic bugs in a giant web and look at live spiders up close. At 2 p.m. adults will hear about spider habits and identification from Barbara Nattere of the Ohio Biological Spider Survey. Then child and adult alike will get a chance to join Barbara, nets in hand, to catch spiders outside The West Woods Nature Center.   This free, all-ages program is wheelchair/stroller accessible. Amateur Radio Class

An Amateur Radio class starts Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Dietrich Building located beneath the radio tower at Family & Community Services, 705 Oakwood Street in Ravenna.  Students can earn their Technician License and join the exciting and fun hobby of amateur radio.  There is a $25 fee payable to the Portage County Amateur Radio Service (PCARS); texts are $30 and will be available at the class.  All students will also receive a one year membership in PCARS. Free Computer Training at Windham Library

Portage County District Library has been partnering with Connect Ohio to offer free computer training sessions to Portage County residents. The training sessions offered will provide basic Internet training such as computer basics, an introduction to the Internet, and email basics. The next session will be held at Windham Library on September 19, 20, and 22 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Register online at www.portagelibrary.org. Wally Waldbauer has arranged for the Geauga County Retired Teachers Association to host “Beyond The Classroom”, an STRS workshop for those who will be ready for retirement in about 10 years.  The workshop will be held at Newbury School Auditorium on Sept. 29, 2011 from 4:30 – 7:00.  Pizza and salad will be served at 4:00, prior to the workshop, for a cost of $5.00.  Current teaching staff will receive additional information about this important and informative event.
