Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities

Weekdays

The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy.  On any  given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table.  They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3.  If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456.

The Phyllis Zumkehr Portage County Clothing Center, which is located at 3377 State Route 59, Ravenna, is looking for volunteers to help with sorting, hanging and stocking clothing and helping customers. Grief Support Group

Sundays

Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville.  Coffee and pastry provided at no charge.

Start Talking Portage is a group of public and community partners who work together as a team to help fight the drug epidemic.  We have a new location for our monthly meeting – Ravenna Library, 167 East Main Street, Ravenna Ohio in the Carlin room.  Come and see what we are all about!  Meetings are the 4th Tuesday of each month, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Wednesday Dinners at Garrettsville UMC

The Garrettsville United Methodist Church will be hosting Soup & Sandwiches every Wednesday during Lent (March 13, March 20, March 27, April 3, April 10) from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.  Donations are welcome.  Bring your friends and enjoy an evening of great fellowship.  We are located on Park Avenue near the YMCA.

Recovery after Suicide Loss Support Group

 Last Weds of Month

If you or someone you know has lost a loved one to suicide, we invite you to attend a free monthly support group to find acceptance, information, and inspiration.  The support group meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Kent Free Library located at 312 W. Main Street, Kent from 6:30-8pm. The group is sponsored by the Portage County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County. Story Time at Mantua Center Christian Church

Children ages 2-5 are invited, along with their accompanying adult (siblings are welcome too) every Thursday to STORY TIME, 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 SR 82.    No cost to families and fun for all!  No need to sign up.  This program follows the Crestwood School schedule.

MCC Storytime Adventure

1st & 3rd Thursday

1st & 3rd Thursday of each month through May 16 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Maplewood Christian Church 7300 State Route 88 in Ravenna. Come for stories, crafts, music and movement for children ages 2 – 5 (adults stay for fun, siblings welcome).  We will not meet if Ravenna Schools are closed.

American Legion Fish Fry

Pork Chop Dinner

On  the 30th of March there will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville United Methodist Church off of St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville.    Dinner begins at 4:00 and we serve until 6:30 or when the food runs out.   The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, cole slaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $10.00 for adults and $4.00 for children.    Take outs are available.  Just a reminder that our doors will not open before 3:45.

Easter Egg Hunt & Kid’s Party

You are invited to attend our annual Easter Egg Hunt and Kids Party on Saturday, March 30th, from 2-4 pm at the Windham Church of Christ, 9837 Wolf Rd, Windham. Pictures with the Easter bunny will be taken and printed and given out at the party. There will be crafts and refreshments. Come join us for an afternoon of family fun!

Pancakes at Hambden Grange

Hambden Grange 2482 is serving an AYCE Pancake Breakfast with corn fritters, maple syrup, sausage, fruit, cocoa and coffee on Sunday, March 31st, from 8:00am to 1:00pm.  The Grange is located at 9778 Old State Road, Chardon.  (Hambden Township) The cost is $7 for Adults and $3 for Children 10 and under.

Scouts Annual Spaghetti Dinner

Scout Troop 8 will hold its annual Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday March 31, 2019 at the Newton Falls First Church of God from noon to 4:00pm. Each year the Scouts of Troop 8 hold a Spaghetti Dinner to raise needed funds for camping registration and equipment and other operating fees.  Walk in orders are welcomed and we have take-out available.  Adult tickets are $8.00 and children 3-12 yrs old are $4.00.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Middle School Soccer

Serious about Soccer AND are you currently a 7th or 8th grader at James A Garfield MS?Well we have an opportunity for you! We are now forming a boys/girls Co-Ed team for outdoor spring 2019 to play in a Geauga County Recreational League. This team will be coached by Mike Coney, the current J.A. Garfield High school boys varsity soccer coach. Don’t miss this opportunity to work with Coach Coney & the high school team. SUPER JOY: Learning To Celebrate Everyday Life

Apple Tree Preschool Open House will be on Wednesday, April 3rd from 5-6:30 PM. We are located in the Garrettsville United Methodist Church at 8223 Park Ave. Registration is now open for the 2019-2020 school year for 3 and 4 year old children. 

Titanic Night in Freedom

April 9 

The Freedom Township Historical Society will host an interactive program on the sinking of the Titanic at 7 pm April 9 at the Freedom Community Center, 8940 S.R. 700. There will be stories about the passengers and crew, movie clips, and samples of refreshments served on board. All are welcome and we encourage everyone to get into the spirit of the evening by dressing in period clothes.

Community Easter Egg Hunt at Mantua Center

Join us on April 20, from 10am to 12 noon at the Mantua Center Civic Center for an Easter egg hunt. Children up to age 8 should bring their own basket and be ready to hunt for eggs. Parents or caregivers should be prepared to help supervise their children in this effort. This community event will feature egg hunts by age groups, a Bouncy House, the Mantua-Shalersville Firetruck, games, prizes – and – a special appearance by the Easter Bunny! Mayfield Church Rummage Sale

A Rummage Sale will be held at the Mayfield United Methodist Church, 7747 Mayfield Rd., Chesterland.
