Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities
Weekdays
The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456.

The Phyllis Zumkehr Portage County Clothing Center, which is located at 3377 State Route 59, Ravenna, is looking for volunteers to help with sorting, hanging and stocking clothing and helping customers. Kindergarten Registration

The James A. Garfield School District is taking reservations for Kindergarten registration for children that will turn age 5 before August 1, 2019. Registration will take place at the Elementary on Thursday, March 21, Friday, March 22 and Monday, March 25, 2019. Grief Support Group
Sundays
Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville. Coffee and pastry provided at no charge.

We have a new location for our monthly meeting – Ravenna Library, 167 East Main Street, Ravenna Ohio in the Carlin room. Come and see what we are all about! Recovery after Suicide Loss Support Group

If you or someone you know has lost a loved one to suicide, we invite you to attend a free monthly support group to find acceptance, information, and inspiration. The support group meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Kent Free Library located at 312 W. Main Street, Kent from 6:30-8pm. The group is sponsored by the Portage County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County. For more information call 330.673.1756 ext 201.

Pancake & Sausage Breakfasts

Join us at the Parkman Community House (16295 Main Market – Rt. 422) for our annual Pancakes and Sausage Breakfasts Sundays in March: from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Adults eat for $8.00; children – $4.00 (Pre-schoolers are free). Take-outs are also available. You can even buy some sausage to take home and enjoy after our pancake breakfasts are done for the year.

Movie Night

It’s Movie Night at Freedom Township Historical Society’s March meeting on Tuesday the 12th; we will be showing a documentary on the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Civil War reenactors will display some of their Civil War artifacts at the meeting which begins at 6:30 PM and is held at the Freedom Community Center, 8940 St Rt 700. The Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), the Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste District, and the Geauga West Library invite you to a free and informative program on the basics of composting. Then please join us on March 13 from 1-4 pm, as Erik Draper, OSU Extension Educator in Geauga County, guides us through the selection, planting and maintenance of a variety of fruits in northeast Ohio. Additionally, Erik brings a wealth of knowledge about plant disease and insect damage common with Ohio fruit growing. Erik’s entertaining teaching style is sure to inspire attendees! Portage SWCD will also offer an expanded list of fruiting plants that will be available for pre-order to workshop participants. Mantua Free Clothing Giveaway

The next free clothing giveaway is being held on March 16th, from 9 A.M. til noon, at 11741 Mantua Center Rd., Mantua Township. It is in the old Mantua Center School, at the corners of St. Rt. 82 and Mantua Center Rd. We are still offering loads of winter clothing for all sizes , esp. ladies. We no longer have shoes, accessories, or linens, due to lack of space for storage! Everyone is welcome; no questions asked; no paperwork to fill out!

Spring Craft & Vendor Show

The Freedom Community and Park Boosters Spring craft and vendor show will be Saturday, March 16 from 10 to 4. We will be having crafters and vendors in two buildings, the Freedom Town Hall and the Freedom Community Center. The Three Lil’ Piggies BBQ Food Truck will be on-site for all of your lunch needs. Designing A Sustainable Landscape

Join Portage County Master Gardener Volunteers, Pamela McDowell and Mary Lou Holly on March 16, 9am – 12pm as they discuss the garden principles and designs to help you create a beautiful and functional landscape. You’ll learn how to divide your yard into sections to develop plans that work with the strengths of your yard to optimize plant, environment, and human health. Many of the principles discussed will be based on permaculture design practices that are low maintenance once established.
