Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities
Weekdays
The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456.

The Phyllis Zumkehr Portage County Clothing Center, which is located at 3377 State Route 59, Ravenna, is looking for volunteers to help with sorting, hanging and stocking clothing and helping customers. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.If you are interested in volunteering, contact Veronica Williamson at 330-819-9760 or email fourwildwinds@yahoo.com.

Kindergarten Registration

The James A. Garfield School District is taking reservations for Kindergarten registration for children that will turn age 5 before August 1, 2019. Registration will take place at the Elementary on Thursday, March 21, Friday, March 22 and Monday, March 25, 2019. Grief Support Group
Sundays
Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Families Anonymous Meetings

Do you have a family member controlled by drugs or alcohol and don’t know where to turn? Families Anonymous might be the support group you need. We meet every Monday (except holidays) from 7:30 to 8:30 pm at Coleman Behavioral Services, Sue Hetrick Bldg. 3922Lovers Lane/Loomis Parkway in Ravenna. For info call Peggy 330-760-7670.

Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville. Coffee and pastry will be provided at no charge.

Monthly Fundraising Dinner
3rd Friday of Month
Dinners will be served at Parkman Congregational Church in the downstairs social hall on the third Friday of every month except December. Serving times 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Price is $12.00 per meal for adults, Seniors (over 65) $10.00, children (5 – 10) $6.00, 4 and under free. Carry out is available. All profits will go to the Geauga Faith Rescue Mission. Each month will feature a different menu. January will be meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Free Clothing Giveaway

Mantua free clothing giveaway will be resuming on January 19th, at the old Mantua Center School, 11740 Mantua Center Rd., in the same location that we originally held it in. The giveaway will run from 9 til noon. Quantities are limited, due to lack of space, but there will be a decent variety.

JAG Historical Society Program

The James A Garfield Historical Society will be presenting a program by Mike Fath on January 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Mott Building on the corner of Main and High St. Be sure to join us as Mike will be educating us on the South Newbury Union Chapel, one of the most interesting buildings in Geauga County where James A Garfield never spoke. The Portage County Senior Center will be holding a Lunch & Learn event entitled “Cordcutting”, on Thursday, January 24th at 10:45 a.m. Reed Library will be presenting everything you need to know about how to make the most of TV without paying for cable. Women’s Auxiliary Offering Scholarship

Mammograms at JAG Elementary

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Mantua Knights of Columbus #3766 is hosting a casino bus trip to Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh, PA, on Monday, February 18, 2019. Cost is $40 per person and will include $20 in free play, plus a $5.00 food voucher. The Casino recommends you have your Players Card and a photo ID with you.
