Safety Town Registration

June 26

Crestwood Primary School (CPS), in conjunction with the CPS PTO, is offering a Safety Town program for incoming Crestwood kindergarteners. Through the program, children will learn how to be safe at home, at school, and at play. Topics covered include Bus, Seatbelts, & Playground Safety; Stranger Awareness, Police, and Gun Safety; Fire Safety, Stop, Drop and Roll, and First Aid. The program will run from July 27-31 at CPS from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. If you register by June 26, you will receive a reduced rate of $25 per child. God Provides a Free Meal June 26th from 4-6pm at Nelson UMC, 9367 St. Rt. 305. Dinner will consist of sausage sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw and dessert.

Moths of the Night

June 27

Come join Joe Malmisur and others as we use black lights and white sheets to attract moths and other night insects for identification on June 27 from 8:30 – 10 pm at Towners Woods. Who knows what we will see, maybe a spectacular Luna or Io moth. We will also be hiking a few trails in search of a Barred or Great Horned Owl. WHOOOO knows what we will see or hear!

Ride-In Bike Show

M.B.A. Ride-In Bike Show at Garrettsville Summerfest will be June 27th. Register from 4-7:30 pm at Garrettsville Eagles on Water Street. Trophy and cash prize for best of show. Winners will be announced at 8pm. $10 registration fee. Bikes must be ridden in to enter.

Youth Shoot (Intro to Firearms)

The Streetsboro Sportsman Association is hosting a free youth introduction to firearms course on June 27th and 28th at 11280 Bloom Rd., Nelson Township 44231. New shooters will be on the 27th, with previous participants shooting on the 28th, the attendees will receive instruction in the safe handling of firearms followed by the opportunity to shoot. The course will be taught by NRA instructors. Shooters are required to have a responsible adult present at the range.  Lunch is provided. Space is limited. Newton Falls 4th of July Committee presents “Weekend Madness” 29th annual car show June 27th. Parking 9am, registration 9:30-1pm, 125 trophies 6pm. Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, DJ Mary O & Jeff, Trilogy to perform at 7pm. Bike Show June 28th, poker run leaves at 12:15, vendors from 9am-7pm, bike show from 9am-6pm, field events at 5pm, DJ Fast Freddie.

Retirees Monthly Meeting

The retirees of U.S.W.A. Copperweld Steel Co. (S.O.A.R. Chapter 1-28-10) will have their regular meeting on June 28th at 1pm at the Windsor House Champion Estates in Champion, Ohio. Refreshments will be served.

5K Race & 1 mile run/walk

5K Race & 1 Mile Run/walk to benefit Glioma Childhood Cancer Research will be June 28th at 9am. Prizes include medals for top place finishers (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) in various age groups. Mantua Community Center

The Community Center at Mantua Center is open every Tuesday from 9:30 am until we run out of people after the potluck lunch.  I’ve been closing up by 2:00 most Tuesdays and coming back at 5:00 for the Don’t Eat Alone Supper, which I provide.  I’d love to have more people come in (a group working on a project, supervised youth, an exercise group–what’s your idea?) to keep it open all day.  If we’re really going to have a Community Center we need more people to come.  Questions?  Call me, Ellie Monroe, 330-274-0711.

Chicken Dinner

July 1

Southington UMC will be having a chicken dinner on July 1st from 3:30-6pm. Menu will include one fourth of a chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, applesauce, coleslaw, homemade desserts and beverage. Cost is $8.50 for adults, $4.50 for children’s chicken tender dinner ages 4-10 and free for children under 3. Carry outs will be available, call 330-898-2156.

Newton Falls 69th annual 4th of July parade will begin at 10am. Line up begins at 8am at the First Church of God.

Veterans Appreciation Day & Fireworks

Burton-Middlefield American Legion Post 459 Veteran’s appreciation day and fireworks will be July 4th at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 6pm and the fun goes until the conclusion of fireworks. Military displays and vehicles, Geauga Fair Band, food concessions, $4 donation per car or $1 per person walk-in. Parents Without Partners Picnic

July 4

Portage County Chapter #600 of International Parents Without Partners will not be having their monthly dance, but they will be having a picnic at the Ritchie Memorial Shelter House pavilion, 109 W. Ave., Tallmadge, OH on July 4thstarting at noon. Nonmembers are invited to join. The chapter will be furnishing the meat, buns and condiments just bring a dish to share. Mantua Farmers Market

The Mantua Farmer’s Market enjoyed a successful sale in May. Make plans to attend the Market for its 12 week season beginning on July 11th from 9am – 1 pm.  Vendor fees of $5.00 per person for each date will help pay for their Handicapped Entrance Project.  Visit the Market at the Church at 10827 North Main Street, Mantua. Run of the Ox Registration Open

Be a part of the 4th Annual Run of the Ox 5K Run/Walk & 1M Family Fun Walk at St. Joseph’s 52nd Ox Roast Fair!!! It will begin at 8:00 a.m. July 18th at the church (11045 St. Joseph Blvd., Mantua). Only 150 participants will receive a t-shirt, so register early!!! Pre-registration fee is $16.00 by July 13. Race day registration is $20.00. The Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre will present “A Slim Chance for a Jumbo Murder”  on August 8, 2015 inside Slim n Jumbos – 8105 Main Street. The cost is $25.00 per person and included a buffet dinner and the mystery. There will be a cash bar and Chinese auction. Doors open at 6pm the event begins at 6:30pm.
