Help JAG Elementary PTO turn Trash in Cash

The JAG Elementary PTO is collecting used ink and laser cartridges, old cell phones and small electronics.  If you are just throwing these items away, let our organization recycle them for you to help raise money for our students.  There will be  collection bins at JAG Elementary School, Middle School, Board Office and Garrettsville Library.  Any local businesses interested in donating on a regular basis can set up a pick up by contacting Holly at 330-527-0023.

Fish Fry

Garrettsville Eagles Fish Fry will be Aug 8th from 4-7:30pm. Fish, shrimp or a combo. Chicken tenders also available. Baked potato or French fries, coleslaw or applesauce and green beans and dinner roll. All dinners are $8.50. To go orders welcome 330-527-2330.

 

Observatory Open

Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will be open to the public on Aug 9th, from 9:30-11PM. The featured object for the night will be Earth’s Moon, a spectacular sight through the observatory’s large vintage telescope. Other objects may also be viewed given time and good seeing conditions. Cloudy skies cancel the event! The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. For updates and more information, see the observatory’s Web site: StephensObservatory.org or “@StephensObs” on Twitter. No reservations are required and there is no admission fee for observatory public nights. Cloudy skies at the starting time cancel the event and, in that case, the observatory will not open. There is no parking at the Observatory. Visitors may park on permissible side streets near the Post Office, a short distance east of the observatory.

 

Harvest Point Church Luau

On August 9 Harvest Point Church (Lordstown, Ohio) will host a community Luau at the city parks at Tod Ave. and Salt Springs Rd. from noon- 3:00 p.m.  This is the fourth year that the church has sponsored this family oriented, fun-filled, FREE event which includes games, food, music and prizes.  There will be a Farmers Market and Bakery which provides fresh produce and baked goods at no charge, a Food Court which will provide hot dogs, hot ham sandwiches, chips and more throughout the afternoon free of charge.  Games for all ages, including the dunk tank, goldfish game, high striker, bounce house and slide, to name just a few, will be available for everyone to enjoy.  Members of the congregation will be available in the prayer tent throughout the event.  Door prizes will be awarded throughout the afternoon.

 

100th Celebration

The former Mantua Center (Township) School is celebrating 100 years since it opened its doors to students in 1914. A special celebration is planned for, August 9th at 1:00pm at the school to recognize the building being placed on The National Register of Historic Places. A special speaker(s) is being invited to attend. All former students, teachers and staff members are invited and encouraged to attend. Canning Workshop

The Portage County Gardeners will reschedule the Canning Workshop to Aug. 9 at 5154 St. Prospect St. Ravenna, Oh 44266 (Rootstown area). You will learn the water bath method of canning as well as pressure canning.  You will also get a Ball Canning Book, and samples to taste. Room Mothers 2014 Luncheon

The Freedom Township School Room Mothers 2014 Luncheon will be held at noon on Aug 12th at Cals Restaurant banquet room in Garrettsville. All room mothers and mothers who had children in the Freedom School are invited to attend and bring guests. Monthly Dance

Coleman Adult Day Services sponsors a monthly dance for Developmental Disabilities participants around the community. D.J. Terri Howe provides the entertainment. Refreshments are served. CEAC Meeting

The Community Evaluations and Accomplishments Committee (CEAC) for Hiram Township will hold its third meeting on August 14 at 7:00 p.m. Discussion will continue about expanding the existing hiking trails throughout the township.  Come and add your input!  This is a public meeting, and any township resident is eligible to serve on the committee.  Location of this meeting is the Hiram Corner Store and Café, 11658 Garfield, Hiram, OH 44234.

Burton Library Book Sale

James A. Garfield Poker Run will be Aug 16th, check in at 10 am, first bike out at 11am, last bike in 4pm. Buy in is $15 per person. This entry fee includes one raffle ticket for a Harley Davidson Forty-Eight! In addition to the raffle, best poker hand wins the pot! The ride begins at James A. Garfield High School. Community Picnic & Health Fair

On August 16th, the Crestwood Lions will be hosting a Community Picnic/Health Fair at Buchert Park in Mantua from noon until 4pm. The Lions will provide free hot dogs, chips and pop for all attendees. There will be eye screenings for adults and children, blood pressure and blood sugar testing, information from various medical providers and chair massages. Local businesses will be in attendance to provide information on the services or products they provide. The Lions will also provide free games for the children. In addition, there will be raffle prizes and a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds from the raffle and 50/50 will go to the Lions 13D Eye Care Foundation, which provides eye surgeries for individuals who have no means of obtaining them by themselves. There may be more. The only way to find out is to come down and see for yourselves. We look forward to meeting with all of you.

Annual Picnic

Freedom Township annual picnic will be Aug 17th in Freedom Town Hall Pavilion. Joining in the festivities will be the Freedom Congregational Church and the Bethel Springs Congregations. Combined church services will be at 10:30am in a large tent. The VFW will hold a memorial service at noon with lunch immediately following. The main meat dish will be provided by the township. The church will be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers. All are asked to bring a dish to pass. Space will be provided in the lawn for an art, craft and music fair. Soil Health Through the Seasons

Wine Tasting

There will be a wine tasting Aug 23rd from 7-11 at Newton Falls City Park (inside the community center if raining). All proceeds will benefit the Newton Falls Park & Recreation. Cost is $20 per couple or $12 per person, this includes one souvenir glass an 3 tasting tickets per person. Lil Paws Winery, Mastropietro Winery and Myrrdin Winery will be featured.

 

Pig Roast & Church Picnic

BBQ Dinner and Fall Preview

James A. Garfield High School will be holding its first annual fall preview night on Aug 24th at 6:00 P.M. The event will be an opportunity to meet the 2014 fall athletes and coaches and to see a performance by the Garfield Marching Pride. The preview will be held at newly renovated JAG Field and is free to attend. Prior to the preview, the JAG All Sports Boosters will be hosting a BBQ Dinner on the front lawn of James A. Garfield High School. The BBQ will begin at 4:00 and will cost $10 per person. Payments can be made at the time of arrival. We ask anyone interested in attending the BBQ Dinner to please RSVP via email at jagboosters@jagschools.org (we are just looking for an estimate on how many people are going to attend).

 

Free Water Well Monitoring

Concerned Citizens Ohio/ Hiram free monthly private water well monitoring using Sierra Club meters to test for “indicators” of water quality in the Community Room of the Hiram Christian Church, 6868 Wakefield Rd., Hiram on Aug 25th at 7pm. For accurate readings, your sample should be taken as directly from the well as possible – before any treatment and within an hour before we test it. Mantua Potato Stomp Race and Fun Run

The 36th Annual Potato Stomp race will take place on September 6th.  The Potato Stomp is a classic road race through the scenic streets of Mantua Village and the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley.  There is a one mile Fun Run that begins at 8:30am and the 3.5 mile and 9 mile races begin at 9am. All races start at Crestwood High school.  Fun Run registration on race day is $8 with no shirt/$15 including shirt.  Race day entry fee for the nine mile race is $15/$20 and for the 3.5 mile race $13/$18.  STAR Therapy will pay the entrance fee for any Crestwood student.  Entry forms are available at Advanced Rehab and Jake’s Restaurant in Mantua.  Registration can also be done online at Active.com.  For race and/or registration information, call 330-842-0856 or email rosalief@yahoo.com
