The James A. Garfield Historical Society met May 18, 2015 at the Mott Building on Main St. in downtown Garrettsville.  It was a mathematical meeting, celebrated with pie.

There has been a slowdown in the process of converting files and records to a digital format but the work goes on.  The group voted to purchase twenty copies of the GarrettsvilleStrong book when it comes out, to have available for sale or donation at a later date.  The JAGHS  Scholarship will be awarded at the Garfield High School awards night on May 26; the winning entry will be read at the society’s meeting on June 15.  Until then it’s a secret. The popular cemetery tour will return this year on June10, led by Kit Semplak, through Park Cemetery.  The tour will begin at 6:00—the Good Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise—rain or shine.  It’s open to the public.  A tour of the Freedom West Cemetery is in the planning stages.

Pam Montgomery was elected the new secretary, following the retirement of Cindy Matson, who has served faithfully in the post for as long as any sane person could.  There will be a crew in on Tuesday to do some swamping out of the basement and other spaces in time for the trash pick-up on Thursday, May 21.   An executive board meeting will be held at 6:00 on May 28.

A cake, pumpkin bars, a custard pie, a raspberry-rhubarb pie and a sauerkraut pie (Yes, it was good.) finished off the evening with long division.
