Women-Owned Businesses on the Rise

1472

Every October during National Women’s Small Business Month, the Small Business Administration (SBA) honors women across the country who run their own businesses.

It all began back in 1972, when there were a little over 400,000 women-owned businesses in the United States. It’s surprising that until 1988, women needed a male relative to co-sign if they wanted to apply for a business loan. That same year, the SBA’s Women’s Business Ownership Act was passed, providing financial assistance to organizations that assisted women-owned small businesses.

As a result, by 2019, women-owned businesses represented 42% of all U.S. businesses, generating an impressive $1.9 trillion worth of revenue in the US. And today, there are over 13 million women-owned businesses across the country. That trend continues on a local level.

In the Village of Mantua, just on the main drag alone, there are four women-owned businesses worth a visit. The first is Bibury & Co, LLC at 4673 E. Prospect Street. Owned by Ann Ellis,  Bibury & Co opened in 2020, and offers hand-made greeting cards, journaling supplies and unique, giftable home décor.

Nearby, J&J Sales (4664 Prospect Street) is owned by US Veteran Jackie Holler, who opened her store in October of 2020. She carries jams and jellies, coffee and tea, and a variety of other country-style items, having opened her doors in October 2020. Jackie and her husband started home décor retail sales 46 years ago; over the past 25 years they’ve been inside other location and decided to have their own retail store in Mantua.

Further down the sidewalk at 4680 E. Prospect Street, you’ll find Jake’s Eats, which is owned by Jodie Fiala and Kim Sumwalt. Their homey restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, featuring daily specials, homemade soups and desserts since 2009. With a longtime interest in the food and hospitality industry, they also opened Jake’s Market (10710 Main Street) to provide locals with fresh fruit and produce, grab-and-go foods, salads, homemade soups and beer and wine.

Lastly, make a visit to Five Five Media Co. (4690 E. Prospect Street), owned by Holly Michelson.  This creative entrepreneur started her business in 2010 when she purchased her first camera.  Her business helps individuals and organizations share their stories using photography, videography, custom painting, web design or graphic design.

This month, visit a women-owned business that’s new to you, or stop by to support one of your favorites. Your dollars will be at work locally, encourage these hard-working women as they work together to help build a thriving community.
